Not being acknowledged for your hard work can suck — and Travis Scott knows this firsthand. He spent years working on 2018’s ASTROWORLD, an album that topped the Billboard charts and earned double-platinum certification. But when the Grammys rolled around, Scott did not receive the recording industry’s most prestigious award for the project.

As you can imagine, the loss was pretty upsetting to the “SICKO MODE” rapper. His new Netflix documentary, Travis Scott: Look Mom I Can Fly, actually offers a look at his reaction to the moment. It shows him storming out of the show, leaving his girlfriend Kylie Jenner behind.

A closer look at Scott’s loss

ASTROWORLD was one of the nominees for Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammy Awards. It competed against Mac Miller’s Swimming, Pusha T’s DAYTONA, Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, and Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap.

Scott reacted to the nomination Twitter, writing that he was so excited that it took him an entire day to process it. “Thank u record academy it’s [taken] a whole 24hrs for it to really hit me. Plus this has Also been my duffle all year,” Scott wrote in a tweet containing a photo of a Grammy Awards bag.

For the big night on Feb. 10, Scott opted for an all-black suit, with his lady, Kylie Jenner, in tow. But, unfortunately, ASTROWORLD lost to Cardi B’s critically-acclaimed debut album, which featured songs like the ever-popular “Bodak Yellow” and the Latin trap anthem, “I Like It.”

Scott’s reaction to the loss was emotional

A clip from the Netflix documentary shows Scott waiting backstage with Jenner and his crew as announcers prepare to reveal the winner for Best Rap Album. When Invasion of Privacy is called, the “3500” rapper hangs his head and makes a beeline toward the exit, leaving Jenner trailing behind.

“F*ck, man!” Scott says while racing out of the building.

Of course, Scott likely didn’t mean to take off on Jenner. It seems like he simply got caught up in the moment and wanted to get out of dodge — fast. Besides, we’re sure she was there to comfort him later on.

It’s not Scott’s first Grammy snub

The Recording Academy also failed to recognize his 2016 album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight. According to Complex, the nominations for Best Rap Album at the 2016 award show instead went to Drake’s Views, DJ Khaled’s Major Key, Kanye West’s Life of Pablo, ScHoolboy Q’s Blank Face LP, De La Soul’s and the Anonymous Nobody…, and Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book.

The rapper’s longtime A&R Sickamore would later tell Rolling Stone that the apparent snub was a “real driver” in ASTROWORLD recording sessions. But Scott also made it clear that his main goal was not to win a Grammy, but to make the “best music.”

“Making the best music is important,” he told Billboard. “It’s always dope to be noticed for your work, but you always just have to remember that as long as you’re making the best music, touching fans and moving spirits, that’s what we all do it for.”

He also stressed that potential nominations were not a motivating factor in the creation of ASTROWORLD

“At some point I was just hoping to be recognized by the [Recording] Academy,” he said. “But I went back in for [ASTROWORLD] and just tried to make good music. [Getting nominated] wasn’t driving me in my mind. It’s just something that kind of like, happened.”

Well, that’s the spirit. With any luck, Scott will win Best Rap Album with his next project. We’ll see.
