What a time to be alive during the ‘80s, an era that brought audiences films such as Twins, Coming to America, Stand by Me, and Weird Science. Actors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger hopped genres, starring in The Terminator and then the comedy Twins with Danny DeVito. The latter turned the two actors into an unlikely — yet hilarious duo — and the film made more than $200 million at the box office. Now, there are plans to recreate that magic in a Twins follow-up movie.

‘Twins’ sequel in the works with Tracy Morgan in the cast

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are returning to the big screen to revive Twins with original director Ivan Reitman. According to Deadline, both actors will reprise their roles as Julian and Vincent, and a sizzle reel for the project was shown at the Toronto Film Festival.

Reitman spoke to Deadline and explained that the idea originated from a conversation with Eddie Murphy and Schwarzenegger. They began fleshing out a story with Murphy as a triplet, but his schedule filled up. Enter Tracy Morgan.

“It was, ‘I should be a triplet, that could be a very funny comedy.’ We started a script with Eddie, and after the success he had with Amazon Prime on Coming 2 America, he got himself booked up heavily,” said Reitman. “And we knew we were going to make it at the beginning of next year. I’d been good friends with Tracy Morgan for a long time and always thought he was one of the funniest men in the world. I thought he would make a terrific triplet, and we rewrote the whole script for him.”

Morgan, a seasoned comedian and former Saturday Night Live cast member, currently stars on The Last O.G. on TBS. His series will debut its fourth season on Oct. 26.

What’s the storyline for the ‘Twins’ sequel?

When Twins ended, Julius and Vincent reunited with their mom, Mary Ann, and they married their girlfriends. Both had their own sets of twins and used money they skimmed from Beetroot to start a business. One can realistically imagine that in the sequel, their children are grown, but they still have time for another family adventure — triplet style.

Reitman explained how they cooked up the plot for the long lost sibling.

“Secretly, there was a third baby born, a Black baby, who hasn’t been in touch with his siblings,” he said. “They don’t know each other and very early in the movie they meet and it’s how they achieve a bond together after all these years. It’s really a film about family and, no matter how different we all are, we have to learn to get along.”

Filming begins in 2022

The untitled sequel is due to start filming in January 2022 in Boston as Reitman said that he wants a winter setting. He’s excited to be in the director’s seat again and teased that the cast has great chemistry. And it’s Schwarzenegger who pushed him to move forward with the story.

It will be a while before this one hits the big screen, but in the meantime, fans can stream Twins on Hulu or Showtime.
