‘Umbrella Academy’ is Coming Back This July — Questions We Have About Season 2
In February 2019, the world fell in love with Netflix’s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy. Inspired by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s graphic novels of the same name, The Umbrella Academy series introduced fans to the Hargreeves family, a misfit group of superheroes played by Aidan Gallagher, Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and Justin H. Min.
Netflix recently announced the release date of The Umbrella Academy Season 2. Here are some of the big questions fans want answered in the forthcoming season.
‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2
Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy will be released on July 31, 2020. “On October 1, 1989 seven extraordinary humans were born,” read a tweet from the show’s official Twitter account. “On July 31, 2020, they return.”
When will season 2 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ take place?
With the cliff-hanger ending to season 1, fans first and foremost want to know when the Hargreeves family ends up. After Vanya (Page) transformed into the White Violin and caused the apocalypse, Number Give (Gallagher) took the entire family back in time to save Vanya — and the world. Fans are eager to learn where and when in time Number Five brought his family. Did they jump back in a time a few days, or are they way back in time? How far back in time is Number Five capable of traveling?
Will Number Five’s time-traveling screw up their ages?
In season 1 of The Umbrella Academy, Number Five is a 58-year-old man trapped in the body of a 13-year-old boy. His appearance is the result of a miscalculation from past time travel, but fans want to know if the same thing happened to the rest of the Hargreeves at the end of season 1. Will they arrive in the future as teenagers? In the scene where they’re jumping back in time, there’s a flash of each family member as their younger self — is this how they’ll appear in season 2?
Some fans think they will end up as the younger versions of themselves. That would be an effective way for showrunners to explore the childhoods each of them missed out on living under Reginald’s reign, but with such a talented cast of adults, it’s unlikely the entirety of season 2 will feature the teen Hargreeves.
Is Vanya done being evil?
In the beginning of season 1, fans felt for Vanya because she was the black sheep of the family — the child seemingly without powers that Reginald cared the least about. It wasn’t until after Vanya’s love interest/stalker Leonard Peabody (John Magaro) manipulated her anger and took away the medication that had been keeping her powers at bay that Vanya became a real danger to herself and season 1’s villain, The White Violin.
For season 2, fans are wondering how Vanya will turn out. Will she still be hell-bent on revenge and require restraint, or has she done enough damage almost killing Allison (Raver-Lampman) and come to terms with the fact that their strained relationship was their father’s fault?
How did Ben die?
In season 1, Number Six, also known as Ben (Min), is one of the main reasons the family ever disbanded. His death left everyone broken, Klaus (Sheehan), in particular. Fans assumed Ben died as an adult, given the spiritual form he takes on when he appears to Klaus. Other than Ben’s presumed age and his ability to summon and control Kraken-like tentacles from his stomach, the series didn’t reveal much else about him. In season 2, fans are hoping for some clarity surrounding how Ben died and why the family fell apart because of his loss.
What happened to the other children born on October 1?
The pilot episode explained how 43 women gave birth on the same day, regardless of how long they’d been pregnant. Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) was able to acquire seven of these children to raise — er, train — in his “Umbrella Academy,” but what happened to the other 36 children? Do they have abilities, too? Will the Hargreeves eventually seek out the others?
Will Reginald Hargreeves play more of a role?
Fans of the graphic novels know that Reginald Hargreeves is an alien — a characteristic that wasn’t revealed until the finale of the Netflix series. With so much backstory from the comic books, showrunner Steve Blackman has plenty of source material to work with.
“If we move on to other seasons, if we’re lucky, you’ll see there [are] more layers to Reginald,” Blackman told SYFY. “I wanted us to think early on he was just a harsh father. But we’re going to find out there’s a lot more to who Reginald Hargreeves is, and what his plan was.” Hopefully, more of that plan will be revealed in season 2.
With so many unanswered questions and so many possibilities, fans are eager to get their hands on season 2 of The Umbrella Academy. At the time of publication, there are only 74 more days left to go!
