Tom Holland fought tooth and nail against countless villains, swung between massive buildings, and endured a sometimes uncomfortably tight bodysuit during his four years as Spider-Man. Still, none of that could prepare the young Marvel actor for the brutal stunts in his next action film: Uncharted. In a recent behind-the-scenes look at one particularly intense cargo plane scene, Holland revealed that Uncharted had him genuinely scared for his life.

‘Uncharted’ features a scene where Tom Holland tumbles out of a cargo plane in the sky

Holland stars as young treasure hunter Nathan Drake in Uncharted, which is based on the popular video game series of the same name. Nathan’s mentor, Sully (played by Mark Wahlberg), takes the boy under his wing, and the two embark on a mission to find a $5 billion fortune and maybe find answers about Nathan’s long-lost brother. However, Nathan and Sully aren’t the only people after the treasure. And the others will stop at nothing to make sure they get to it first.

In one scene, Nathan finds himself in a gunfight with their enemies while flying on a cargo plane. But Nathan has no gun. He must avoid getting killed, dodging bullets behind large boxes on the plane. Meanwhile, Sully pulls those boxes off the plane one by one as he floats away with his parachute.

Nathan gets his foot caught in the netting around one of the boxes, which hurls him off the plane. He must jump between the boxes and hang on for dear life, all while getting shot at. Nathan finally makes it back to the plane … only to get pushed off again by a vintage red car.

Tom Holland said he was genuinely scared while filming the ‘Uncharted’ cargo plane scene

Holland’s look of terror in the Uncharted cargo plane scene is anything but acting. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star revealed in a recent behind-the-scenes video that the scene was one of the scariest to film.

“The sequence where we’re flying out the back of the plane on the boxes … I mean, we must have shot that for five weeks, almost every day,” he said. “At times, I’d be like, 100 feet in the air, attached to a box that is spinning. And then I would basically hang on until it would throw me off.”

Holland admitted that it was “really scary” sometimes, but that “level of fear” just made the scene feel more “authentic.”

As surprising as it may sound coming from a Marvel actor, Holland said Uncharted has some of the most challenging stunts he’s done to date. While guest starring on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast back in February 2021, Holland revealed the work left him pretty banged up.

“The cuts and bruises and bangs I got from dangling off of wires and falling off things was ridiculous,” he said.
