It’s hard to look at Jax Taylor or Stassi Schroeder and connect them with anything other than Vanderpump Rules. The entire cast seems to live and breathe SUR, even the ones that don’t work at the restaurant anymore. Their whole lives are wrapped up in the world of Lisa Vanderpump.

But they all must have had lives before serving Pumptinis. Here’s what the cast was up to before they started working for Vanderpump and Bravo.

Stassi Schroeder

Vanderpump Rules is not Schroeder’s first go around with reality television. It’s actually her third.

In 2005, Schroeder first appeared on tv when her father signed their family up to be on The Amazing Race.

“I didn’t have a chance to think about if it was something I wanted to do,” Stassi told Entertainment Tonight of her break into reality tv. “It was always just been something that I’ve done. And then I realized that I was kind of good at it.”

She was only 17 at the time and her family didn’t win the competition.

“I remember why we lost — because my family didn’t listen to me. Because I’m always right! If they just would’ve listened to me!” she exclaimed.

By the time 2008 rolled around, Stassi had shed her brunette locks and moved to LA. She was then cast in Queen Bees, a show that was supposed to be about reforming mean girls.

“I lied about who I was,” she told the outlet about her time on the show. “I had to tell stories about how I was mean to people, and I made them all up! Most of the girls in there were not, like, actual mean girls. But they filmed us 24/7 and we lived in a house for a month and had therapy every day, so we convinced ourselves that we were bad people that needed therapy. That I was actually mean. Once it all ended I was like, ‘I just had to do full-on method acting to make this work.’ And then to bounce back afterward.”

Though Schroeder loves reality television, she doesn’t think she could do that kind of show again.

“I had nightmares for — oh my god, so long after that show. That cameras were always filming me and making me be something I’m not. When you’re filmed 24/7, it’s scary. I couldn’t do that again.”

Scheana Shay

Shay was actually an actress by day and a server by night at Villa Blanca before she moved over to SUR. She first came onto our screens when she had an affair with actor Eddie Cibrian while he was married to former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Brandi Glanville. Before her Vanderpump Rules days, she also appeared on shows like Greek, Jonas, Victorious, and 90210.

Brittany Cartwright

Before meeting Taylor, Brittany Cartwright lived in Kentucky. She formerly worked at Hooters.

Jax Taylor

Before working at SUR, Taylor moved to LA to become a model. He was actually born Jason Taylor, but changed his name to make it in the modeling world. He has modeled for brands such as Gemelli and Pere de Temps.

Kristen Doute

Doute moved to LA from Minnesota to be an actress. She had actually achieved a bit of success before landing a role on Vanderpump Rules. She appeared in movies like Behind Your Eyes (with Tom Sandoval,) Blood on Canvas, and 23 Minutes to Sunrise.

Tom Sandoval

Before serving up drinks at SUR and opening Tom Tom with Vanderpump, Sandoval was a musician and model. He actually met Taylor through modeling when he was in Miami.

Ariana Madix

Before working at SUR, Madix was a bartender at Villa Blanca. She has also appeared in CollegeHumor videos and had a role in an episode of Anger Management. She also appeared in movies like, Dirty Dealing and Killer Eye: Halloween Haunt.
