What is Verzuz?

The COVID-19 pandemic closing venues everywhere meant that performers had to think of new ways to connect with their audiences. Hip hop superproducers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland came up with Verzuz, where two artists livestream together as they play 20 hits from their catalog and fans decide who the “winner” is.

Even though Verzuz is styled as a competition, it’s all in good fun. Even the much anticipated Snoop Dogg vs. DMX battle, which pitted West Coast rap against East Coast rap, was a friendly affair, and both rappers were just happy to be there.

Aubrey O’Day wants to do Verzuz

Countless celebrities just tuned in to Brandy and Monica‘s historic Verzuz battle, and also offered their thoughts about who should be in a future faceoff. Danity Kane frontwoman Aubrey O’Day was live-tweeting the event, and offered her thoughts about who would make a great Verzuz battle.

“I want a Danity Kane v. Pussy Cat Dolls #verzuztv,” O’Day tweeted.

What is the relationship between Danity Kane and the Pussycat Dolls?

Both Danity Kane and the Pussycat Dolls were girl groups at the top of their game in the late 2000s. Danity Kane was born on P. Diddy’s show Making the Band; Aubrey O’Day was one of the group’s original members, and she’s been associated with the Danity Kane name for the last decade throughout all its lineup changes and music releases.

The Pussycat Dolls were formed as a girl group that aimed to highlight the musical talents of each member, but many people felt it quickly became all about Nicole Scherzinger, with the other Dolls acting simply as her background singers.

Both Danity Kane and The Pussycat Dolls went on tour with Christina Aguilera on her Back to Basics tour in 2007. However, by the beginning of the next decade, both girl groups had broken up.

Has Verzuz ever had a girl group participate?

Verzuz has yet to host groups or bands in its livestream battles. Everyone who has participated is a solo artist of some kind, whether that be a singer, a songwriter, a rapper, or a producer.

Verzuz began with men, but the streams featuring women have been some of the most popular. The battle between R&B icons Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, for example, drew over 700,000 viewers. Alicia Keys put up a strong fight for John Legend in their Juneteenth faceoff. And of course, Brandy and Monica‘s historic Verzuz meetup broke records and drew over 1.2 million viewers.

A Verzuz battle between Danity Kane and The Pussycat Dolls would be a first, not just for the Verzuz platform, but for both girl groups in general. And given the response to O’Day’s tweets, the fan desire is definitely there.
