Who is Freydis?

Viewers first meet Freydis when she is a slave at the battle in York in season 5. Originally supposed to be sacrificed to the gods, Ivar ends up freeing her. Freydis is able to manipulate Ivar and she tells him he’s special and loved by the gods.

They meet again in Kattegat and things move forward from there. She admits she’d even die for him if he wishes it, and Ivar starts to really fall for Freydis. Soon, they are married and she becomes the Queen of Kattegat.

Freydis even somehow convinces Ivar that he is a god. She promises Ivar a child, though it’s impossible for him to give her one. Freydis ends up sleeping with someone else to get pregnant and claims the child to be Ivar’s.

The child is born deformed and Ivar leaves him out in the woods to die. Freydis never forgives him for this and it eventually leads to both of their downfalls. Freydis helps his brothers defeat him and admits it to Ivar. He strangles her and she dies, forever haunting Ivar with what he did.

Is Freydis really dead?

In season 6, Ivar is still with the Rus Vikings. In episode 5, Ivar meets Prince Oleg’s (Danila Kozlovsky) soon to be wife who is a doppelganger for Freydis. Princess Katya (Alicia Agneson) is identical to Freydis and Ivar is pretty sure she’s one in the same.

Obviously, this is really messing with Ivar. He killed Freydis for her betrayal, but somehow she’s either still alive or has a doppelganger. Fans don’t yet know the answer, but Ivar is certainly going to try and find out.

Ivar is a unique individual who has hardened over the years in more ways than one. Growing up knowing that he would have been killed had he been born in any other family, Ivar doesn’t warm to many people. Freydis was different and was able to get to the real Ivar, whether it be through manipulation or actual love. Ivar felt vulnerable with her and it hurt him when she betrayed him to his brothers. He couldn’t just let that slide, even for the love of his life.

Ivar arguably never loved anyone else besides Freydis and his mother, Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland). Freydis’ loss hit him hard, though he felt it was a necessary move. Seeing her again, or at least her doppelganger will definitely shake Ivar to his core. Who knows what he might do to get to the truth of the matter?

Prince Oleg could certainly have something to do with it considering he knew about Ivar the Boneless even before they laid eyes on each other. One thing is certain, Freydis was important to Ivar and he will stop at nothing to find out what’s really going on.
