‘Vikings’: Why the Love Between Ragnar Lothbrok and Lagertha Never Ended
Vikings is working on its last season and with certain developments, it’s time to take a look back at the love Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) shared. Read on to learn why their love never really ended. There are spoilers ahead for season 6 of Vikings.
Lagertha is Ragnar’s first wife
Lagertha is the first wife of Ragnar and she has two children with him. However, Ragnar cheats on Lagertha after she miscarries their child. The woman he cheats with, Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), ends up pregnant with his child. She comes to Kattegat, and it leaves Lagertha in a real predicament. Ragnar refuses to turn Aslaug away, and so Lagertha chooses to leave him and her life behind.
Lagertha helps Ragnar take back Kattegat
They both clearly still love each other and the break up is hard for them both. Years later, Ragnar needs help reclaiming Kattegat and Lagertha chooses to help him. She doesn’t have to, but she chooses to do so because she still loves him.
After they take back Kattegat, Ragnar clearly wants Lagertha to stay with him. However, Lagertha has other obligations as she is married to the earl of Hedeby. She leaves instead of staying, even though she clearly still loves Ragnar in return.
As time passes, Lagertha ends up pregnant by Kalf (Ben Robson). She suffers a miscarriage while they are all away raiding. The way Ragnar reacts clearly shows that he still loves Lagertha and he never stopped. He stays with her as she cries from the loss.
Lagertha and Ragnar reunite and go to Valhalla
In season 6, Lagertha is killed and she finally gets to enter Valhalla. She descends in the water towards the Valkyries. She lays to rest beside Ragnar for the last time. “In my dreams, we are always together,” Lagertha says as she settles next to Ragnar one last time. The symbolic moment shows the love they had for one another was eternal and everlasting.
Fans react to their love
Fans seem to agree that the love between Ragnar and Lagertha never ended. “I think their love never ended.. even if Ragnar followed his dream of having many sons,” a Reddit user wrote.
Numerous others agree that circumstances kept them apart, but they still cared for each other very deeply.
“No speculation there, OP. That’s precisely the case,” another Reddit user agreed. “All Aslaug was to Ragnar was a hookup that turned into a baby-mama situation and he would have felt guilty if he abandoned her. He even tried to propose a polyamorous marriage to Lagertha but understandably her pride and trust was broken. Definitely a tragic love story in a sense between Ragnar and Lagertha because they loved each other forever but circumstances and emotional wounds kept them apart.”
One user thinks that Ragnar marrying Aslaug was one of his biggest mistakes of his life. “I think taking that second wife was his biggest mistake (besides handing himself over to be executed),” another user explained.
With all the evidence taken into account, it’s clear that Ragnar Lothbrok and Lagertha were soul mates. They still loved each other until the moment of their deaths. Even when Lagertha dies, she goes to rest by his side. Their love is eternal and it changed the entire landscape of their world.
