Queen Elizabeth is always photographed carrying a handbag

No matter if she is meeting with the British Prime Minister or greeting the public, Queen Elizabeth usually has a top-handle bag hanging from her forearm. And, according to Us Weekly, Her Majesty carries treats for her beloved Corgis, as well as mints, a fountain pen, family photos, reading glasses, lipstick, and a small mirror.

The Queen also carries a crisply folded £5 or £10 note to put in the church offering on Sundays, and she makes sure to have a portable hook with a suction cup so she can discreetly hang her purse underneath a table.

But, when it comes to Queen Elizabeth’s purse, it’s not just about what’s inside. The Monarch actually uses her purse to send signals to her staff. If she is at dinner and suddenly places her purse on the table, that means she will be leaving in five minutes. If she places it on the floor during a meeting, her staff knows that she is not enjoying the conversation and she is telling her lady-in-waiting to come to her rescue.

Queen Elizabeth owns approximately 300 handbags, and her favorites come from Launer London, which has provided her with purses for more than 40 years. She also favors bags with longer handles so she can easily shake hands with people.

Kate Middleton carries cosmetics in her designer purses

As a style icon who is photographed relentlessly when she is in public, Kate Middleton wants to make sure that she is always looking her best. When the Duchess of Cambridge is carrying a clutch, she makes sure to have lip balm, a handkerchief, and a compact so she can powder her nose.

If you are wondering why the Duchess of Cambridge is always carrying a clutch instead of a purse with handles, Beaumont Etiquette founder Myka Meier says she “holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward.” According to royal protocol, Middleton must extend her hand first, so if she prefers to just smile instead of shaking hands, she uses her clutch to do that.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of Action on Addiction, attended the first annual gala dinner in recognition of Addiction Awareness Week. Before the dinner, The Duchess of Cambridge met former Action on Addiction clients Jay Otty and Melanie Bennett, who worked to prepare food for the gala dinner. Jay is a key member of the ‘front of house’ staff at @Brink_Liverpool – Action on Addiction’s ‘dry bar’ in the city. He has worked in the hospitality industry for seven years, having now been clean and sober for nine years. Melanie says that Action on Addiction’s Self-Help Addiction Recovery Programme, which taught her coping mechanisms and new behaviours, and started the grieving process for her father which she had been blocking for ten years, helped saved her life. Speaking at the dinner, The Duchess said: "What’s remarkable about Action on Addiction is that it goes beyond helping those who are suffering on the courageous journey into recovery – it also lends direct support to the children and families affected by addiction – for as long as it takes." Action on Addiction is the only UK addictions charity that works across all the areas of research, treatment, family support and professional education. The aim of Addiction Awareness Week is to provide a platform for focused conversations about the many different facets of addiction, to enable a wide range of organisations to engage with people and families who may be affected by addiction, and to raise public awareness of the far-reaching and negative effects of addiction. The ultimate aim is that as honest but inspirational stories are shared, those affected by addiction will then feel more able to take the necessary steps to access help, hope and freedom from their addiction. @ActionOnAddiction #AddictionAwarenessWeek

However, Middleton has recently switched from her famous clutch style to a handled-bag from British brand Aspinal of London.

“Kate always looks so feminine, elegant and chic,” says Mariya Dykalo, the brand’s creative director. “She’s worn our bag in two different colors now — I really liked the lilac version with the matching lilac outfit, it was so beautiful and feminine.”

Meghan Markle is always ready to shake hands

Markle quickly became a style icon once her relationship with Prince Harry went public, and she broke tradition right away by wearing a crossbody clutch bag to a royal event. The Duchess of Sussex always has a trendy handbag with her during public appearances, and every style sells out immediately after she is photographed carrying it.

The mother of Archie Harrison always makes sure she is ready to shake hands with her fans by carrying hand sanitizer in her purse, along with mascara, and some designer sunglasses.

From clutches to designer totes, Markle already has an impressive collection even though she’s only been a member of the royal family a little over a year. Some of her favorite designers include Gabriela Hearst, Oroton, DeMellier London, Mulberry, Strathberry, and Gucci.
