Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez ended their relationship last year after four years of dating and two years of being engaged. Here’s what Lopez says she learned about being single after they called off their wedding.

After Lopez and Rodriguez broke up, she said it was “the best time” in her life. She also said that she’s “never been better.” She wanted to let her fans and friends know that she was fine after the breakup. “I want people who care about me, because I care about them so much, to know that [I’ve never been better],” says Lopez during an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.

Lopez says she learned a lot about relationships after breaking up with Rodriguez. The biggest lesson she took away from the experience was that she is OK by herself. She learned to embrace being single. “I’ve really gotten to a place in my life where I’m great on my own, and I think once you get to that place, then amazing things happen to you.”

Lopez also says she loves the life she is living. She feels content despite her last relationship not working out. The singer wasn’t single for long and is now focused on nurturing her relationship with Affleck.

“I love my life right now,” Lopez tells Lowe. “I love what I’m doing. I love where I’m at. I love the person I’m continually evolving into and becoming. And that kind of joy, that kind of happiness, that kind of love, always inspires me. When I feel really good, I feel like I do my best music.”

Jennifer Lopez says ‘it’s good’ to be single

During a 2015 interview with Us Weekly, Lopez explains that when you’re single, you have more freedom. However, she says she wouldn’t do anything too “wild” as a single woman. At the time, Lopez was divorced from her third husband, Marc Anthony.

“Being single is good,” she tells the publication. “You have really nobody to answer to, so you can do whatever you want! But I don’t think I go wild or anything.”

Jennifer Lopez says this life is about her

During a different interview with Apple Music 1, Lopez further discusses her break up with Rodriguez and the lessons she learned after they parted ways. She emphasized once again that she was OK being alone. She also learned she must make relationship choices that are best for her.

“This moment really was about for me, not about anybody else,” says Lopez. “It was about me realizing I was good on my own and happiness starts within me. And once I realized that, things happened.”

Lopez also says once she became comfortable being on her own, her life took an unexpected turn. “Things happen that you don’t expect to ever happen,” she says. “Once you get good, once you get to the point where you’re like, ‘This is not right for me,’ or ‘This doesn’t feel good,’ or ‘I need to make an adjustment here,’ this is not really about anybody else but me. Once you do that, stuff starts falling into place.”

Lopez went on to say change can be painful but it’s often necessary. “Sometimes you have to change direction even though that might be painful, or it might seem weird to other people,” adds Lopez. “It’s really just about who you are and what feels right to you.”
