Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been working with streaming giant Netflix to produce content for its platform. However, an animated series Meghan has been working on, Pearl, was recently canceled by Netflix.

Although Netflix has also canceled other projects in the works, a royal expert believes this recent development could have some implications for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s future content.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have not released much content

In 2020, after Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals and moved to California, the two of them signed deals with Netflix, Spotify, and Penguin Random House to release media, podcasts, and books.

However, the couple has run into criticism for not releasing enough content. So far, Meghan has only published a children’s book—The Bench, which came out in June 2021.

Meanwhile, she is working on a podcast called Archetypes. Harry is working on a docuseries about the Invictus Games as well as a memoir.

What this recent cancellation says about the Sussexes’ future content

Onlookers have a lot to say about Pearl—a show about women’s history—being canceled by Netflix. Royal reporter Richard Eden believes it could be a sign that Netflix is not interested in anything from the Sussexes unless it concerns the royal family.

“What’s so significant and what’s frankly worrying is I think the only projects that will get the green light from Netflix now will be personal ones about the royal family,” Eden said on Mail Plus’ Palace Confidential series.

“The only current project they have is about the Invictus Games, which is a very worthy cause, but it’s all about Harry,” he continued. “And we saw how Meghan sort of muscled in on that. She went to the Invictus Games in the Netherlands and gave a speech even though she has no formal role with Invictus.”

Eden added, “I think any future projects will have to be similarly personal. You know, it could be how Prince Harry’s coped with grief after the death of his mother or something to tie in with his memoir, but it will have to be personal and it will have to involve the royal family, and that puts them in an awkward position because I don’t think they wanted to do that and certainly it will make people nervous back at Buckingham Palace.”
