Ariana Grande is one of the biggest superstars in the world. In just a few short years she has gone from Nickelodeon star to a top-selling artist. Throughout her journey, the singer has relied on many things to get her where she is today.

Her relationship with her family and friends is obvious, evidenced by how she talks about each. Her faith has been something that has guided her as well, but it hasn’t always been a simple path.

She was raised Catholic

Ariana Grande was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida. She was the second of two children.

Her older brother Frankie was 10 years old when she was born. The singer has always been open about the very close relationship the two have and often refers to him as her best friend. The two children were raised Roman Catholic. But the singer admits that she soon discovered that the religion was not right for her.

In a 2013 interview, Grande revealed that the beliefs of the church did not align with her values.

“[The church] said Spongebob Squarepants is gay and he’s a sinner and he should burn in hell. And Harry Potter was a sin. And working women. I was like, ‘Enough! First the gays, then Spongebob and now Harry Potter? Get out of my house!’ I was not having it. And the working women thing? It was a moment for me. I needed something else to believe in.”

But there was a final straw for the “thank u next” singer.

Grande revealed in 2014 that her brother had a big influence on her choice to leave the Catholic church. Her brother Frankie is openly gay. This goes against Catholic values.

The singer told The Sunday Telegraph: “When my brother was told that God didn’t love him I was like, ‘OK, that’s not cool.’ They were building a Kabbalah centre in Florida so we both checked it out and really had a connection with it.”

The singer credits her beliefs for where she is today

Grande credits Kabbalah for changing the way she views things and the way she responds to them. Kabbalah is a school of Judaism and focuses on the essence of God.

The singer told The Sunday Telegraph that Kabbalah “‘sort of stuck with me. And since then my life has unfolded in a really beautiful way, and I think that it has a lot to do with the tools I’ve learnt through Kabbalah, I really do.’

What does she mean by tools? Grande says, “you have to watch your intentions, make sure you’re not giving in to your ego. You have to numb your reactive state. You have the power to change your reality.”

Grande recently won her first Grammy

Grande has seen tremendous success. She has sold millions of albums, sold out stadiums worldwide, and been compared to the likes of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

She has won a Kid’s Choice Award, two VMAs, a People’s Choice Award, and a Teen’s Choice Award. It’s amazing to think that with the voice that she has that it took so long for the singer to win a Grammy.

Though she has been nominated in the past, Grande didn’t win her first gold trophy until this year’s Grammy awards. The singer was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance. She ended up walking away with a win for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Grande received her first Grammy nomination in 2015 for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the hit “Bang Bang.” She received several other nominations before finally winning. Though she didn’t attend this year’s show, she did acknowledge the win on Twitter.
