Too many fantasy shows have branded themselves “the next Game of Thrones.” However, Amazon Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time series might be able to fill those shoes. Based on Robert Jordan’s bestselling book series of the same name, this new addition to genre television has the potential to become a sprawling epic. In fact, showrunner Rafe Judkins revealed plans for eight seasons while attending 2021’s Comic-Con@Home.

Of course, those looking forward to the show are probably more interested in when the first season comes out. Fortunately, Amazon gave fans an idea of when to expect The Wheel of Time Season 1.

What is ‘The Wheel of Time’ about?

From the sound of it, The Wheel of Time series will closely follow Jordan’s fantasy novels, which take place in a world where only women have access to magic. The men who can channel it often become corrupted, leaving Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) in a predicament when she comes across a group of kids — one of whom is destined to have enormous power.

The obvious choice is Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski). However, any of Rand’s friends could prove the hero (or villain) Moiraine is searching for. Amazon’s description of the series reads:

“Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.”

To make matters worse, the Dragon Reborn is sought out by a villain called the Dark One. This puts a series of dangerous men on the group’s trail as they make their way to the home of the Aes Sedai.

When will Amazon’s ‘The Wheel of Time’ series arrive on the platform?

During the Comic-Con@Home panel for The Wheel of Time series, Amazon unveiled a new poster that offers insight into the show’s release date. According to the artwork, the show will premiere in November 2021. With Amazon’s weekly release model, that means episodes will drop through late fall and early winter.

The first season of The Wheel of Time will consist of six episodes, making it a relatively short run. There’s no word on when fans might see a trailer or a more specific premiere date.

Fortunately, it does look like season 2 could take less time to arrive.

Amazon is already working on season 2 of the series

Amazon may be taking its time releasing news about The Wheel of Time Season 1, but the studio is already working on the second season. Several days before the show’s Comic-Con@Home announcements, its official Twitter posted a photo to celebrate the start of production on season 2.

“And the wheel keeps weaving,” the account wrote. “Filming for Season 2 of our series kicks off today!”

Hopefully, that means viewers will see The Wheel of Time Season 2 sometime in 2022. After all, the six episodes that drop later this year are bound to leave fans wanting more — especially those wishing to see all of Jordan’s books brought to the screen.
