Every year has its ups and downs, but 2020 has definitely been punctuated with more downs than ups. That’s why the news that Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are officially engaged has been an especially welcome bit of joyful news amid all the more disappointing and distressing headlines. While celebrity news is often an escape from the more troubling real world, the two spheres have collided often in 2020, including when several celebrity couples called it quits while quarantining together. Rumors were swirling that Shelton and Stefani were struggling amid the stress of the pandemic and that they, too, might be another couple claimed by the quarantine blues.

Luckily, the rumors were either false or the couple managed to work through their differences and come out even stronger — because now there are wedding bells in the near future.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were an unlikely duo

When news first broke that Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton were a couple, fans were a little shocked. After all, Stefani rose to fame as a bad girl frontwoman for the famous ’90s band No Doubt, and her tough rocker image was iconic enough to carry her to a successful solo career. Meanwhile, Blake Shelton was a famous country singer known for his humble sense of style and crooning abilities. There wasn’t a lot of overlap in the pair’s fan bases or social scenes, and it seemed like a strange match.

When the pair met on the set of The Voice, however, sparks were flying, and there was no denying the chemistry between them even if they did come from different worlds. Shelton has served as a judge on the reality TV singing competition since its 2011 premiere, and Stefani was brought on as a judge in 2014. Since then, Stefani has continued to serve in the role off and on while Shelton’s long-standing placement on the show has remained firm.

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton were both going through divorces

It isn’t just the distinct genre differences that make Stefani and Shelton’s love noteworthy. Fans were also a little scandalized because both of the musicians were married when they met — to other musicians. Blake Shelton had been married to fellow country music star Miranda Lambert, and the pair had enjoyed being seen as the king and queen of country music in their picture-perfect marriage. At the same time, Stefani had been married to fellow rock star Gavin Rossdale since 2002.

Both Stefani and Shelton were suffering from the stress of their respective divorces as they got to know each other better, and the pain of these experiences helped solidify their bond with one another. In fact, hearing about Shelton’s pending divorce made Stefani reach out to Shelton to share her own experience. What started as a casual check-in became near-constant communication as the pair realized they were falling in love.

Stefani and Shelton have been together for a long time — at least by Hollywood standards — and fans have long been hoping to hear about wedding plans. Throughout 2020, fans were catching glimpses of the couple quarantining together on Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch, and hoping that the cozy time together would lead to wedding bells. It certainly would be a long time coming. Way back in 2018, Stefani had admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that she frequently thought about getting married: “I think about it all the time.”

When rumors started that Stefani and Shelton’s relationship was on the rocks, hearts were breaking. As ET Canada reports, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Not only have the pair weathered the storm, but they’ve also come out with an engagement announcement! In Shelton’s Instagram post announcing the accepted proposal, he thanked Stefani for “saving my 2020 . . And the rest of my life.”

We know the two are planning to have two ceremonies, but there’s no word yet on the date of the wedding, and we can imagine that the pandemic will play a part in delaying the nuptials. It’s likely the two will marry in 2021 or 2022, but at least we know that there’s something to look forward to!
