Nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards will occur in November

For music fans curious about when nominees for the upcoming Grammy Awards will be made public, the wait won’t be long. A new press release from the Recording Academy reveals that the organization will announce the nominations for the 2022 Grammy Awards on Nov. 23, 2021.

To be eligible to be nominated, the music must have been released between Sept. 1, 2020, and Sept. 1, 2021. The press release states that voting on eligible work will take place from Oct. 22, 2021, to Nov. 5, 2021.

After nominations are announced on Nov. 23, 2021, voting for the Grammys will last from Dec. 6, 2021, until Jan. 5, 2022. Once voting is complete, the 2022 Grammy Awards will air on CBS on Jan. 31, 2022.

The Recording Academy has had issues with diversity in the past

In May 2018, a Recording Academy Diversity & Inclusion Task Force was formed. Findings from the Task Force were published on Dec. 12, 2019. The report can be found on the Recording Academy’s website.

After examining the national governance committees, nomination review committees, Board of Trustees, and the President/CEO of the Recording Academy, the Task Force found that the organization did not represent the diverse demographics of the music industry.

“However, despite the indisputable importance of these committees, they have historically not included members that reflect the demographics of society at large,” the report reads.

The Recording Academy made changes for the 2022 Grammy Awards

On April 30, 2021, the Recording Academy announced voting changes will be put in place for the upcoming 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

According to a press release, two new categories will be added: Best Global Music Performance and Best Música Urbana Album. The Recording Academy will also get rid of “Nominations Review Committees,” which are “5-30 highly skilled music peers who represented and voted within their genre communities for the final selection of nominees.”

Instead, “Nominations in all of the GRAMMY Award general and genre fields will now be determined by a majority, peer-to-peer vote of voting members of the Recording Academy.”

In the press release, the Recording Academy shared that “the results of GRAMMY nominations and winners are placed back in the hands of the entire voting membership body, giving further validation to the peer-recognized process.”

Going forward voters will also be limited to the number of categories they are allowed to vote in.

“To ensure music creators are voting in the categories in which they are most knowledgeable and qualified, the number of specific genre field categories in which GRAMMY Award Voters may vote has been reduced from 15 to 10. Additionally, those 10 categories must be within no more than three fields,” the Recording Academy wrote in a press release.

Music fans will be able to see the results of these changes following the 2022 Grammy Awards.
