Where to Stream the New ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Movie

The Broadway production Dear Evan Hansen took the stage by storm. After its success, film producers reinvented the play into a movie. Now, it will premiere in theaters on Sept. 24, 2021. After winning a Tony Award for Best Actor, Ben Platt reprises his role in the film adaptation.

Most were overjoyed when they discovered the play would hit the big screen. However, streaming services became the norm throughout 2020. Can Dear Evan Hansen be streamed once it reaches theaters?

What is ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ about?

The original musical concentrates on Evan Hansen in his senior year of high school. Hansen takes on another family’s tragedy that he didn’t earn.

While the storyline involves heavy emotional content, critics praised its lighthearted and bold synopsis. Once the trailer was released, fans were glad to see that the storyline was intact. However, most film adaptations have slight differences between the stage production and the movie.

When In The Heights and Rock of Ages were adapted for the screen, fans shared their grievances with each adaptation. Rock of Ages has mutliple differences from the musical, and In The Heights was criticized for its failure to cast Afro-Latinx actors.

Viewers hope that Dear Evan Hansen will do the musical justice.

How to stream the movie

Most who don’t prefer theaters hope they can stream Dear Evan Hansen from their own screens. After looking at the example that Hamilton left (although it is a filmed performance rather than an adaptation), musical fans hope the flick will follow suit with streaming.

Since it is a Universal Pictures production, Dear Evan Hansen should stream on Peacock after its theatrical release. According to Reuters, Universal will send its new movies to Peacock within four months of its premiere.

However, viewers have another opportunity to catch the movie earlier than its wide release. Dear Evan Hansen is scheduled for an early premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 9, 2021; fans can stream the musical online.

Who is in the cast?

The movie has a large cast, but Platt, Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams, and Julianna Moore are some of the most recognizable faces.

Platt has a wide array of projects under his belt. The actor began his career in theatre, starring in several productions, including The Sound of Music and The Book of Mormon. He is one of the few people nominated for a Tony, an Emmy, and a Grammy award. The actor was also seen in Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2. The first film revealed Platt’s musical talent.

In addition to Platt, Stenberg stars in the film as Alana Beck; most recognize her as Rue from The Hunger Games. Her character becomes a vital symbol throughout the film series even after she is gone. The rising star has also been in Columbiana, Everything, Everything, The Hate U Give, and The Darkest Minds.

Hollywood powerhouses Moore and Adams portray Heidi Hansen and Cynthia Murphy, respectively. Moore is recognized for her roles in Crazy, Stupid Love, The Kids Are All Right, Still Alice, and The Hunger Games. The actor has received countless accolades, including Emmy, Academy, and Golden Globe Awards.

Adams has also been in show business for several years. She is known for her breakthrough role in Catch Me If You Can followed by dramatic roles in Doubt and The Fighter. However, she has also starred in the musical comedy, Enchanted as the lighthearted Giselle.
