What was ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ all about?

The Dukes of Hazzard revolved around cousins, Bo and Luke Duke, who lived in Hazzard County, Georgia, with their cousin Daisy Duke and Uncle Jesse. Family friend and auto mechanic, Cooter, provided comic relief and backup for the Dukes. The Duke boys were often at odds with town leaders and local law enforcement and enjoyed making the county commissioner, Boss Hogg, look foolish.

The Dukes of Hazzard, which aired for seven seasons, was famous for Bo and Luke’s high-speed car chases. The cousins zipped around town, evading police in their Dodge Charger, nicknamed General Lee. The car was painted with an unforgettable Confederate flag design, and for years has been a point of contention among media buffs, fans, and activists.

Can fans watch ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ today?

The Dukes of Hazzard was a part of the TV Land line-up in recent years. But in 2015, the network pulled the show, as reported by Variety. The network’s decision came shortly after a brutal hate crime, carried out by white supremacist, Dylann Roof.

As noted by Deadline, in the wake of Roof’s mass murder of Black churchgoers in South Carolina, many companies chose to distance themselves from the Confederate flag, a symbol associated with racism.

Since then, fans have relied on streaming services to relive the adventures of The Duke Family. The Dukes of Hazzard is currently streaming on Amazon’s IMDb TV, but according to Variety, the series may be streaming on borrowed time.

As mentioned above, The Dukes of Hazzard features the Confederate flag prominently painted on the General Lee car. According to Variety, Amazon is considering removing the show from its selection “because of the Confederate flag’s association with the history of racial intolerance and slavery.”

In any case, if Amazon discontinues the show, enthusiasts who enjoy The Dukes of Hazzard can check out various streaming services that offer episodes for rent or purchase.
