Corinne Foxx and Sistine Stallone make their film debuts in 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. The sequel sicks sharks on four new scuba diving women, including Foxx, Stallone, Brianne Tju and Sophie Nelisse. Foxx and Nelisse play sisters Sasha and Mia. Sasha lets Mia tag along when Alexa (Tju) takes them scuba diving. Nicole (Stallone) goes deeper than Alexa advises and that’s where the trouble begins.

Writer/director Johannes Roberts returned to write and direct 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. He spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet this weekend and discussed casting the new heroines for his sequel. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is in theaters now.

Mandy Moore and Claire Holt were not coming back for ’47 Meters Down: Uncaged’

No spoilers for the original 47 Meters Down, but even if the stars of that movie survived their shark encounter, Roberts always intended to create new characters for the sequel.

“I didn’t feel that there was a story to continue from the first movie,” Roberts said. “I felt it needed to be a whole new adventure. So we then started again fresh.”

Corinne Foxx and Sistine Stallone could be fresh faces to face the sharks

When casting 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, Roberts was looking to assemble a group of friends with no baggage from previous on-screen roles.

“They were all very fresh,” Roberts said. “I think it really helped to have this amazing energy amongst them that really works in the movie. I don’t think it would have worked to have bigger stars. It was not that kind of movie.”

Foxx and Stallone, as well as Tju, nailed their auditions.

“Sistine came in and just like energy like a shockwave,” Roberts said. “It’s quite intoxicating. Brianne gave an amazing read. Corinne came on quite late but had known the head of the studio. We chatted to her.”

Nelisse was someone Roberts pursued.

“It wasn’t a deliberate thing but Sophie was first on,” Roberts said. “I really loved The Book Thief and had wanted to work with Sophie.”

Corinne Foxx and Sistine Stallone are Jamie and Sly’s daughters

If you haven’t placed the names by now, yes, Corinne Foxx is Jamie Foxx’s daughter and Sistine Stallone is Sylvester’s. Foxx has appeared in music videos and TV episodes before and Stallone was a model before acting.

“I knew their backgrounds,” Roberts said. “When you’re casting out of L.A., it’s the sort of thing you come across quite a lot. It doesn’t really affect how you approach someone. There’s a lot of acting lineage in L.A. It was fun. I loved chatting to them about their families. It’s nice when the person isn’t precious about talking about that.”

Corinne Foxx, Sistine Stallone, Sophie Nelisse and Brianne Tju all did scuba training

47 Meters Down: Uncaged did not film in real underwater caves, but the actors were in a water tank for the entire shoot. Even though it was a safe studio space, they had to learn how to dive.

“Yes, they did a lot of intensive training,” Roberts said. “They’re actually really quite highly trained now because cave diving is the most dangerous recreation sport in the world. So they are not. They’re pretty highly trained [now]. It’s scary stuff that they were doing.”

The soundtrack to ’47 Meters Down: Uncaged’ is full of celebrities too

Roberts likes to use classic rock in his movies. The Strangers: Prey at Night included two Jim Steinman songs. There’s no Steinman in 47 Meters Down but you’ll recognize other hits.

“I had so much fun with that on The Strangers, going and finding these ‘80s tracks that I grew up with,” Roberts said. “So I sort of took that over into this a little bit. I wondered what it would be like to set the shark attacks to some of these tracks, like The Carpenters track.”

The Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” and Roxette’s “The Look” can be heard even in the depths of 47 Meters Down: Uncaged.

“‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ was in a John Carpenter movie called In the Mouth of Madness,” Roberts said. “It’s one of my favorite movies so I’ve always wanted to use it. ‘The Look,’ yeah, I love Roxette. We wanted to be fun and sexy.”
