Prince Charles and Princess Diana‘s lavish wedding in 1981 resembled something out of the storybook, but their marriage was no fairy tale.

It’s believed that Charles only asked Diana to marry him because of mounting pressure from his family to find a suitable bride. Many also think the prince was still in love with Camilla Parker Bowles when he proposed to Diana. These factors resulted in a union that wasn’t a happy one. Much of the public has always felt bad for Diana and what she had to deal with, but an unearthed report is claiming that Charles was actually called a “saint” for putting up with her.

Read on to find out which royal family member called the Prince of Wales a “saint” for dealing with his first wife.

Who said Prince Charles was a ‘saint’ for putting up with Princess Diana

Diana admitted that she battled bulimia and depression while married to Prince Charles and blamed her husband’s remarks about her weight and affair with Camilla as the causes. But some royal watchers said the princess was difficult at times just for the sake of being difficult.

The Express noted that in the 2018 biography Harry: Conversations with the Prince, royal commentator Angela Levin claimed that Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, recognized that.

“Based at Highgrove, Charles was consumed with guilt that he had made Diana so unhappy and in doing so had also let down the queen, the Queen Mother, Prince Philip, his sons, and the British people,” Levin wrote. “He found a rare moment of solace in a letter he received from his normally critical father [who] wrote that he felt Charles had displayed the ‘fortitude of a saint’ by putting up with Diana.”

Other reports claim that Philip really felt for Diana and wrote letters to her in which he offered to try and help her save her marriage to his son.

“If invited, I will always do my utmost to help you and Charles to the best of my ability,” one correspondence read.

According to The Sun, another letter allegedly written by the Duke of Edinburgh revealed that he and the queen were in shock to learn that Charles wanted to leave his wife for his mistress.

“Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position,” Philip reportedly wrote to his then daughter-in-law. “We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”
