At 38, Poppy Harlow is one of the younger news anchors at CNN, or almost any cable news station. She has been at the anchor desk for six years already and is one of the New York anchors of CNN Newsroom. Other New York-based anchors include Brooke Baldwin, who comes on later in the day, and Jim Sciutto, with whom Harlow co-anchors, weekdays from 9-11 am ET. So just how did Harlow get her start, who is her husband, and do they have a family? Let’s take a look.

Poppy Harlow’s journalism beginnings

Harlow was born in Minneapolis in 1982. Her first name is Katharine, but at some point, her mother started calling her Poppy, and it stuck. Harlow lost her father when she was 15, but she continued to work hard on her high school studies, graduating from The Blake School and being accepted to Columbia University. From Columbia, she graduated Magna Cum Laude earning her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies.

During her college days, she got an internship with CBS, remaining there upon graduation, according to Biography Tribune. She was hired by NY1 News in 2006. By 2007, she was recruited by Forbes’s Video Network covering business, entertainment, and fashion news. Shortly afterward, CNN took notice.

In 2008, Harlow accepted an offer from the cable news station landing the position of anchor for CNNMoney.com. She also started reporting for the station at large including national and international news. For her investigative work and online reporting, she received a Gracie Award. By 2012, she became a correspondent and by early 2015 she was anchoring her own show, according to Columbia College Today.

Her net worth is estimated to be around $6 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Harlow’s husband, Sinisa Babcic

In her interview for Columbia College Today, Harlow said that she runs her story ideas by her husband, Sinisa Babcic, whom she says is her biggest supporter. The two met when she made a trip home to Minnesota following her graduation from the university.

Babcic is an investment banker working for Ernst & Young LLP. He graduated from the University of Illinois’ Urbana-Champaign College of Business in 2004 with a degree in Business Finance. He worked at a variety of financial businesses before landing at Ernst & Young in 2013. He was named Senior Manager in the firm’s Advisory Services Practice in 2015, a position which he retains today. 

In 2012, the two were married in a small ceremony with friends in New York.

Harlow and Babcic have two children and there is quite a tale to tell around the birth of each. In late December 2015, Harlow was pregnant with their first child. Due in a few more months, Harlow was on the air, when she overheated and passed out. She had been fine up until the incident, but when a slide of a new political poll popped up in front of her, her words became slurred, and then she stopped speaking, according to Parents. The network broke to a commercial, and others covered for her.

Harlow reappeared a few minutes later, telling her viewers she was fine. However, she was taken to the hospital as a safety precaution following up with a Tweet to her viewers, “Update from the hospital — our little girl due this spring is doing just fine. Was a scare but we are both ok. Thank you all so much!” She was back on the air the next day. In April, Harlow gave birth to their daughter, Sienna.

The couple’s second child, a boy they named Luca James, was born in February 2018. Just five days later, his mother, the dedicated journalist, could not turn down the opportunity to interview the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Columbia’s Alfred Lerner Hall’s Roone Arledge Auditorium had a sold-out crowd to watch the interview live, according to Columbia. It was held as the closing presentation for She Opened the Door, the school’s first university-side women’s conference.

While Babcic is not particularly fond of the limelight, Harlow, who has millions of viewers, also has some 20,000 followers on Instagram and close to 100,000 on Twitter.
