We all know Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s oldest son, Prince Charles, and many are also familiar with their daughter, Princess Anne, and Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew. However, most people forget or aren’t even aware that the royal couple also had another child.

Prince Edward is the youngest of Her Majesty and Philip’s children and the royal who fans know the least about. He’s been living a quiet life under the radar for some time but we’re about to start seeing and hearing a lot more from him. Here’s the reason for that plus more about Edward including his age, net worth, who he’s married to, and how many children he has.

How old is Prince Edward and what is his net worth?

The prince was born Edward Antony Richard Louis on March 10, 1964. At the time of his birth, he was third in line to the throne behind only his two older brothers. Today he’s 11th in the line of succession.

Edward attended Jesus College, Cambridge and tried his hand at television production even starting his own company, Ardent Productions. However, he stepped down as production director and joint managing director in 2002 to focus on his public duties. The company shuttered in 2009.

These days Edward is a full-time working member of the royal family and receives an annual salary via the queen’s income from the Crown Estate. He has an estimated net worth of $45 million.

In 1993, Edward met public relations consultant Sophie Rhys-Jones at a tennis event. The two began dating and tied the knot in 1999. Unlike his siblings, the prince and his bride requested that their wedding be a low-key affair with no ceremonial state or military involvement. Edward is the only one of the queen’s children still married to his first spouse.

The couple has two children together. They welcomed a daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, in 2003, and a son, James, Viscount Severn, in 2007. Their son is 12th and their daughter is 13th in the line of succession.

Why Edward isn’t a duke like his brothers?

Upon marriage, royal princes usually receive a dukedom from the monarch, however, on Edward’s wedding day that was not the case. Instead of a duke he became the Earl of Wessex and because of his status, his wife is not a duchess but rather known as the Countess of Wessex.

This is the way Edward actually wanted it. He was set to become the Duke of Cambridge but asked his mother for the Earl of Wessex title after the character Lord Wessex from the film Shakespeare In Love.

The queen granted his request and that Duke of Cambridge title later went to his nephew, Prince William.

Why we’ll start seeing much more of him

The Earl of Wessex and his wife don’t crave attention and have decided to raise their family out of the spotlight. The pair said that they want their children to have as normal of an upbringing as they possibly can which is why the kids are rarely seen in public.

While Edward has shied away from the limelight for years, we may be seeing a lot more of him as he is continuing to take over more duties for his father who retired in 2017. It’s also been reported that when Philip passes away, Edward will get his Duke of Edinburgh title.
