Animated series for adults are definitely having a moment. First of all, it’s important to note that cartoons have not always strictly been for kids, and there’s definitely nothing new about animated entertainment aimed at adult audiences.

In fact, many of the “classic” cartoons we now think of as kids’ shows from decades ago were originally crafted for grown-ups. These days, though, there’s no question about the mature material found in series like Family GuyThe SimpsonsSouth Park, and King of the Hill

Rick and Morty is one of the most popular series among the animated adult genre, and it has provided a platform for some actors to rise to fame — or at least for their voices to do so.

‘Rick and Morty’ premiered in 2013

In 2013, Rick and Morty premiered on Cartoon Network’s late-night segment called Adult Swim. There, the series was right at home with shows like Robot Chicken and Mike Tyson Mysteries.

Rick and Morty, as the title suggests, focuses primarily on two characters. Rick is a genius scientist with a drinking problem that contributes to his carelessness. He goes on adventures with his 14-year-old grandson, Morty, who is anxious and not nearly as bright as his genius grandfather. The two go on adventures across the “infinite universe,” mostly causing trouble along the way.

The show is a mishmash of absurdist nonsense, clever gags, and topical commentary — including an announcement from the characters about the importance of washing one’s hands during the pandemic. Fans are anxiously awaiting the series’ fifth season.

‘Rick and Morty’ was created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland

The creative minds behind Rick and Morty belong to Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. Together, the pair have some pretty impressive writing and acting credentials. Harmon is probably best known for his work on the hit series Community, where he served as creator, writer, and producer. Earlier work for Harmon included writing many shorts and the screenplay for Monster House

Meanwhile, Justin Roiland has both writing and acting credits that stretch back for years. He and Harmon both worked on Acceptable TV. Other acting credits for Roiland include The Sarah Silverman ProgramFish Hooks, and Gravity Falls. He’s been a writer for House of CosbysReporters, and Fish Hooks

Serving as both the writer and a voice actor on many of his projects is standard practice for Justin Roiland, and he certainly has stepped into the role in a big way for Rick and Morty. In fact, Roiland voices both main characters. While it’s impressive enough that Roiland is able to so smoothly provide the vocals for two characters who are so often in dialogue, his voice work for the series doesn’t stop there, as Den of Geek reports.

Other characters who Roiland plays on the series include Mr. Poopybutthole, Albert Einsten, Greebybobe, Eyeholes Man, and Blob Alien. To put it simply, if there’s a part that needs a voice, there’s a good chance that Roiland will be able to step in and fill the role. Perhaps it is this impressive and intense involvement that has made Rick and Morty such a beloved series for fans. It’s clear that Roiland believes in the project and is willing to put the time and effort into bringing his vision to life for fans.

The wait to find out what the next season has in store shouldn’t be much longer, and those who are anxiously awaiting Season 4 to release on streaming services have even less time to wait!
