The Duggar family is known mostly for being one of the largest families in the United States. However, something else people can’t seem to overlook about them is their extreme devotion to God. From their clothes to their house rules to their entire upbringing, the Duggars do everything for the Lord. But why are they so religious?

Jim Bob Duggar grew up in a religious family

When it comes to the Duggars’ devotion to God, it’s mostly Jim Bob who instilled those values into his family. Jim Bob Duggar grew up very religious. He attended a Christian school and used to seek out people who needed to find the Lord and tell them all about God. However, contrary to what people think, the Duggars are not Mormon. (People tend to associate the Duggars with this religion because of the way they dress.) They’re actually devout Baptists, which is a very intense division of Christianity. When Jim Bob was younger, he used to go door to door trying to spread the word of God. And one day, he came across Michelle Duggar.

Michelle Duggar, surprisingly, was not very religious until she was a teenager

It seems unbelievable, but Michelle Duggar wasn’t actually born into a very religious family. According to Bustle, she attended public school and didn’t get involved in Christianity until she was a teenager. She had started to read more into religion, and Jim Bob caught wind that she was becoming more religious. He showed up at her door to talk to her about God, and the two ended up hitting it off. Michelle began to attend Sunday school with him, and things sort of fell into place for them. And when the two got married (they were still teenagers), they decided to raise their family according to Jim Bob’s upbringing.

The couple lost their first baby to a miscarriage and decided to let God determine how many children they had

When the two first got married, they actually used birth control. However, Michelle had a miscarriage and they believed they’d sinned. They decided to no longer use any form of birth control whatsoever and instilled that same idea into their children. The couple raised their kids according to their Baptist religion: Everything was for God, and any form of intimacy prior to marriage was forbidden. The girls wore skirts to make sure none of their curves enticed any men. The kids couldn’t kiss the people they courted (or do anything more, of course) until they were married. And it all stems from Jim Bob’s house rules.

While the kids hold tight to their religion, they don’t seem to abide by all of their parents’ rules

Jinger Duggar recently stepped out in a tank top.

Today, the kids have a bit more independence because many of them have married and are now living on their own. Jinger Duggar wears pants and even posted a photo wearing a tank top recently. The married daughters have been able to explore fashion a bit more and don’t only stick to skirts and shirts that cover their shoulders. While they all still seem very devoted to God, it doesn’t look like the kids will have the same strict rules for their own children that their parents had for them.
