The relationship between Camilla Parker-Bowles and Prince Charles began long before they were married in 2005. They met in 1970 at a polo match, and although they seemingly couldn’t keep away from each other, they both went on to marry other people.

Even after marrying other people, they still carried on their affair. It wasn’t until 2003, 33 years after they first met, that Prince Charles and Parker Bowles began living together. And, in 2005, they officially became husband and wife, making Parker Bowles the Duchess of Cornwall.

Many royal fans may not be aware that Prince Charles actually has two very distinctive connections to Parker Bowles’ son, Tom, as he became his godfather before marrying Parker Bowles, and later on, also became his stepfather. So, given the nature of the relationship between Prince Charles and Parker Bowles, why did she make the prince the godfather to her son?

In 1973, while Prince Charles was away with the royal navy, Andrew Parker Bowles married the now-duchess. According to Readers Digest, Prince Charles dated other women, all the while thinking of his former flame. Andrew and Camilla stayed married for 22 years, eventually divorcing in 1995, 10 years before she joined the royal family as the wife of the Prince of Wales. During her marriage, Camilla had two children: Tom, born in 1974, and Laura, born in 1978.

Camilla Parker Bowles’ first marriage wasn’t easy from the very beginning. Her husband reportedly wasn’t faithful to her during the union. E! News reports that Parker Bowles had hoped he would change, although she finally had to accept the fact that he never would. He even made moves on several of her friends. As upset as she was regarding her husband’s infidelity, she continued to stay married to him, even remaining faithful until 1986, when she rekindled her relationship with Prince Charles.

Why did Camilla Parker Bowles choose Prince Charles as Tom’s godfather?

It may seem a bit unusual that Parker Bowles would choose Prince Charles to be the godfather of her son. In reality, Prince Charles had remained good friends with Parker Bowles and even had a friendship with her husband. Prince Charles and Andrew Parker Bowles played polo together quite often. Prince Charles also spent time at Camilla and Andrew’s home, and Camilla bonded with Queen Elizabeth.

Camilla Parker Bowles’s priorities as a mother

One of Camilla Parker Bowles’ main priorities was giving her children as stable a life as possible. This wasn’t always easy with her husband’s lifestyle, and with Prince Charles was such a supportive friend of hers, so much that she decided that he was the best person to be the godfather of Tom. Parker Bowles’ son said in an interview with 9 News Australia that he adores Prince Charles, who he has always thought of as a “kind and lovely man.” Tom went on to say that his stepfather will someday make a “fantastic” king, and also that “he makes my mother happy and my mother makes him happy, so that’s the main thing.”
