Michelle and Barack Obama are the proud parents of two stunning daughters: Malia and Sasha. But you would think that they’d have a larger brood than that, considering how great they are with children.

When the Obamas aren’t snapping photographs with kids, they’re likely dancing with them or raving about how much they adore them. So, why didn’t they have more?

The Obamas had issues getting pregnant

In her best-selling memoir, Becoming (2018), Michelle revealed that she experienced infertility and miscarriage issues. Around the age of 34, she wrote, she realized that “the biological clock is real” and that “egg production is limited,” which prompted her to seek IVF treatment.

But the process wasn’t easy. Michelle later said in an interview on Good Morning America that her relationship began to suffer because she had to administer IVF injections by herself after Barack joined the state legislature.

“Marriage counseling for us was one of those ways where we learned how to talk out our differences,” she added to ABC. “I know too many young couples who struggle and think that somehow there’s something wrong with them. And I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and who love each other, we work on our marriage. And we get help with our marriage when we need it.”

What Malia and Sasha are up to now

Michelle and Barack’s eldest daughter, Malia, is well into her college career at Harvard University. As of writing, she’s a junior majoring in an unknown field. But reports suggest that she might be studying something entertainment-related.

As Page Six reported in 2017, she once had an internship with now-disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The outlet also reported in 2015 that she worked on the HBO drama Girls.

Sasha, on the other hand, is a first-year student at the University of Michigan. Her major is also unclear.

Michelle and Barack are happy

Now that their kids are all grown up, Michelle and Barack could not be any happier to start the next chapter of their lives. The former First Lady said so herself in a post celebrating their anniversary on Oct. 3.

She captioned a photo of them, “27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure. I’d say he’s delivered. Here’s to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what’s next—while still feeling the magic that brought us together all those years ago. Happy anniversary, Barack.”

Meanwhile, Barack shared a photo of them looking at the sunset along with some lyrics from The Beatles song “Getting Better.”

“Like the Beatles said: It’s getting better all the time. Thanks, babe, for 27 amazing years!” he wrote.

Before they know it, they’ll probably be grandparents. So stay tuned, folks.
