Why Sebastian Stan Felt ‘So Scared’ While Filming ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, and How Anthony Mackie Helped Him Overcome His Fears

Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan have formed a close relationship after years of working on Marvel films. When the time came to film 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', Mackie helped Stan overcome some fears he was having on set.

Marvel’s hit Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concluded its first season on Friday, leaving fans wanting more. And even though the future of the show is uncertain, series stars Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie remain optimistic about what’s next for their characters.

The two actors have a ton of history together, as they’ve both starred in other Marvel works such as Captian America: Civil War and the Avengers franchise. Over the years, they’ve developed a rapport that’s clearly visible on screen, and even more so off.

Working on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a challenging process for everyone involved, and there were certain moments in which Stan felt overwhelmed by the task. Fortunately, his good friend Mackie was there to help him overcome his fears and deliver an unforgettable performance.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stan revealed there were moments during production that he felt intense emotions of fear.

“There were times when I was so scared, and like, really trying to find the truth of everything,” Stan said.

Anthony Mackie helped him overcome his fears

Because Stan and Mackie have years of experience working together, Mackie was able to help calm Stan down. He reminded him that the show was supposed to be fun, and kept the mood light while they worked through scenes.

“He had to pull me back and be like, ‘Yo, just remember we’re going to have some fun too. This is a ride, this is a thing. Yes, let’s find the dramatic moment, but just remember that it’s supposed to be fun too.’ And I think that’s a very important thing that you need. Especially, I think, going into Marvel, but also, just that this show needed,” Stan said.

Later in the interview, Stan declared that Mackie deserved a ton of credit for the success of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier due to his undeniable leadership qualities.

“I think Anthony deserves a lot of credit here because one of the things that I think makes—one of the things I love about him, that I feel makes him a really great leader is he can read a room very well,” Stan said. “And he can read people very well. And I think he had a much better hand on the temperature of the show than I did.”

Anthony Mackie loves the humility of the Marvel team

In the same interview, Mackie said that a big part of Marvel’s sustained success is the lack of egos while working on set together.

“I think at this point in our careers, usually there’s a certain tinge of ego or competition involved,” Mackie said. “And the great thing about my entire ride in the Marvel career is … I’ve never experienced any ego or machismo or anybody pushing to say, ‘This is mine, and I’m going to do this.’”
Although there aren’t many answers about a possible second season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it’s fair to say this isn’t the last Marvel fans have seen of Stan and Mackie.
