Will Mateo Be In ‘Superstore’ Season 5?
Superstore fans only have to wait a little over a month for the show to return to their TV screens. The fifth season of the show premieres Sept. 26, 2019 at 8 p.m. Exciting right? The workplace comedy follows the lives of the employees of the fictional Cloud 9. It tackles social issues that affect the working class. Although it’s a comedy, the season finale of the fourth season ended on a dark note. After an I.C.E. raid, Mateo was taken into custody for being an undocumented immigrant. So will Mateo be in the fifth season of Superstore?
Mateo is in the promotional poster for season 5 of ‘Superstore’
When Amy Sosa became manager of the fictional Cloud 9 store she worked to fight the injustice of the corporation. After Mateo was taken from the store, Amy and Ben Feldmen’s character, Jonah, decided to unionize in an effort to fight back. Superstore recently released the promotional poster for the fifth season, and it seems all of the employees are ready to put up a fight.
As the group hides behind a shelf while a Cloud 9 robot approaches they all seem ready to strike. A majority of the characters hold various equipment from the store. However, the characters hold the baseball bat, broom, tennis racket, and gardening shears as weapons. The text on the poster reads, “Taking out the competition.”
Mateo is in the middle of the group of employees. From the looks of it, the rest of the characters built a protective circle around him. Based on the poster, one could assume the employees of Cloud 9 will help fight for Mateo during the fifth season.
Nico Santos admitted Mateo will be back in ‘Superstore’
The show stars America Ferrera as Amy Sosa. Ben Feldmen, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Bloom, and Mark McKinney also make up the main cast. For the fifth season, Kaliko Kauahi became a series regular as well. The cast recently appeared at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con.
During an interview with TVLine, Nico Santos, who plays Mateo, answered a question about the fate of his character.
“‘I am back for Season 5,’ Santos admitted. But ‘then I get hit by a meteor and die.’”
While the last part of Santos’ statement is a joke to keep fans guessing about his character, he did confirm Mateo is in the fifth season.
What else can fans expect from season 5 of ‘Superstore’?
The biggest news fans know about the fifth season of Superstore is Kaliko Kauahi is now part of the main cast. Kauahi plays Sandra, a quiet employee who often experiences bad luck. In the fourth season, Sandra was a major player in pushing for the employees of the store to unionize. Because she is a main character now, fans can expect to see Sandra playing a larger role alongside Amy and Jonah.
At Comic-Con, Ferrera also confirmed the love story between Amy and Jonah is a major plotline. The relationship “is going to play a big part… We’ll get somewhere,” said Ferrera.
