Mayans MC has reached its season 4 finale, and fans should prepare for something terrible to come. The extremely bloody season has already seen two character deaths, and it’s very possible another character will fall in the final episode. But will it be the end of the story? Could the season 4 finale also be the series finale? Has FX renewed the Sons of Anarchy spinoff for season 5? Here’s what we know.

Should ‘Mayans MC’ fans be concerned about another death in the season 4 finale?

The current season of Elgin James’ biker drama has been the bloodiest by far, featuring two deaths that happened in a very short period of time. First, fans saw the death of Coco (Richard Cabral) by gunfire in episode 5 “Death of a Virgin.” The Mayans member was killed by the Sons of Anarchy, who were out for revenge after the death of Allesandro Montez (Jacob Vargas).

In the penultimate episode, “The Calling of Saint Matthew,” Emily’s (Sarah Bolger) sister Erin (Holland Roden) was supposedly killed off screen after Emily decided to get out of town and instructed Erin to leave with her son.

At the end of the episode — when Emily was trying without success to get in touch with Erin — fans saw a scary-looking man with blood on his hands in possession of her phone. As a nursery rhyme played, the man shut the door, and Erin was heard pleading before a gun went off.

Fans didn’t see Erin’s death, but the assumption is that she has met her end. Now the question is: Who will be next? The battle between the Sons and Mayans isn’t over, the finale preview showed EZ (JD Pardo) threatening his own brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and Felipe (Edward James Olmos) has already come close to death in a confrontation with his own son.

Will the season 4 finale be the series finale?

As season 4 comes to a close, both FX and Mayans MC creators have remained quiet about a season 5 renewal. But their silence isn’t necessarily bad news. As one of FX’s highest-rated scripted dramas, it doesn’t seem possible that they would end Mayans MC without advertising a series finale.

Four seasons in, the drama is likely past the point where it would be unceremoniously canceled without giving Elgin James the chance to finish his story.

The showrunner told Deadline last year that he actually felt Mayans MC could ride for seven seasons, just like its predecessor Sons of Anarchy.

“Definitely, and that’s sort of how we have it planned out, just because that’s the model we knew,” he said. “Then, who knows? Shows usually don’t run seven seasons anymore, so it may just be one [more] season. We just know, each time we get to live another day, we’re just going to lay it all out.”

‘Mayans MC’ showrunner Elgin James has a plan for the end of the series

James also revealed he “for sure” had an endgame in mind for his Sons of Anarchy spinoff. The showrunner said he had lunch with executive producer John Landgraf between seasons 2 and 3, and that’s when he laid out his plan for the entire Mayans MC series.

“I told him if we’re lucky enough to be able to get more seasons to finish the story, this is where we’re going to end up. So, we do know exactly where the whole thing’s going,” James said.

The Mayans MC Season 4 finale airs Tuesday, June 14 on FX.
