Going into season 3 of Yellowstone, star Cole Hauser promised that Rip and Beth’s romance would be a major focus. The drama definitely delivered, and by the fourth episode, they were happy and starting their new life together.

Fans were shipping the couple so hard that they were calling for a wedding and a pregnancy by the end of the season. But that didn’t happen. This begs the question — why can’t Rip marry Beth?

The ‘Yellowstone’ star says Rip and Beth are ‘a perfect match’

The undeniable connection between Rip (Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) was obvious during the first two seasons. Their love and respect for each other was the result of a lifelong friendship, and it was clear that they would do anything for each other.

Heading into season 3, Hauser told Hollywood Life that Rip and Beth’s relationship was “up and down.” But he noted, “that’s what makes them interesting.”

“I’ve loved working with Kelly. She’s just a spectacular actress and a wonderful person. In season 3, we get to do some really good work together,” Hauser promised.

The actor went on to say that Rip and Beth didn’t know “for a very long time” that they were “absolutely” meant to be together. But things started to change when they became adults.

“Maybe Rip thought that more than Beth did, but as they grew up into young adults and into their later years, I think they became a perfect match. They’re a powerful couple,” Hauser noted.

Things started to feel too good to be true for Rip and Beth

In the fourth episode of season 3 titled “Going Back to Cali,” Rip and Beth were finally together. But things were going so well that fans were worried something bad was on the horizon. They were right, as Beth revealed to Rip that she couldn’t have children. He told her that it didn’t matter to him, but she clearly wants to have kids.

According to Meaww, the shocking scene prompted fans to share their thoughts on social media. Many wondered if Beth’s inability to bear children had some connection to her hatred for Jamie (Wes Bentley).

They ended up being right, as season 3 revealed that Beth did get pregnant with Rip’s baby when they were teens. However, when she got an abortion, Jamie let Beth get sterilized and she never forgave him.

By the end of the season, Beth had asked her father (Kevin Costner) for his blessing to marry Rip, and she popped the question herself. He also had his mother’s body exhumed so he could take the ring from her finger and give it to Beth.

Why Beth and Rip cannot have a traditional wedding

Even though Rip now has John’s permission to marry Beth, it doesn’t mean that they can have a traditional wedding. As fans of Yellowstone know, Rip’s tragic childhood led John to make some decisions to protect him.

When Rip was a boy, his father murdered his mother and brother, leading him to kill his father by hitting him over the head with a frying pan. John took the now-orphaned Rip in to raise him as his own.

This move led John to erase Rip from the public record for his own protection. Meaning he has no birth certificate, so he cannot just go down to the courthouse and get a marriage license.

But, Beth being Beth, didn’t care that they cannot have a “real wedding.” She just wanted to have a ceremony on the ranch in front of their friends and family and be married in their eyes. That is, of course, if she survived the season 3 finale of Yellowstone.

Will Rip marry Beth in season 4 of ‘Yellowstone’?

Going into the season 3 finale, fans were hoping for a wedding. Instead, they got a shocking ending that left Beth’s fate up in the air. As the final episode of the season drew to a close, Beth and her secretary were cleaning out her office at Schwartz & Meyer. But when her assistant started to open a box inside another box, it exploded.

Fans are still pretty confident that Beth survived and will make it into season 4. They are also hoping that a wedding will come sooner rather than later.

“I didn’t think we would have a wedding season by the end, too many loose still left to tie up,” one fan wrote on Twitter. “We will hopefully get one in season four or maybe Rip and Beth will have a really long engagement like until the final season. I really hope that doesn’t happen.”

Season 4 of Yellowstone is expected to premiere on the Paramount Movie Network in the summer of 2021.
