With summer winding down it’s time for many children to return to school including Prince George and Princess Charlotte. This year, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s daughter will be attending the same school as her big brother and royal fans have been interested in everything from what the Cambridge children’s curriculum will include to what they’ll be eating every day.

People have also been curious about how the young prince and princess will get to and from school since we know there won’t be a school bus stopping for them outside Kensington Palace. Here’s the surprising way they will be getting back and forth and what they’ll be learning this year.

When do Prince George and Princess Charlotte return to school?

Charlotte will join her older sibling at Thomas’s Battersea when they return to school on Sept. 5. The young royals have a packed curriculum and will have lessons in core subjects like math, English, science, history, geography, and religious studies. They also have more specialized courses in French, computing, art/design, technology, music, drama, and ballet. William recently said that George “loves” his ballet classes, which he began taking in Year 1.

And when it comes to their lunch, Charlotte and George won’t be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Their lunch options are on a three-week menu cycle which changes with the seasons so the school serves lighter fares in the warmer months and hearty meals in the colder months.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge‘s kids and their classmates will choose from a menu of fresh fish, several selections of meat, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. The meals on any given school day could include everything from turkey and ham pies served with broccoli, cauliflower, and potatoes to smoked mackerel, lentils, spinach, and sweet potato curry.

The students also have a variety of dessert options including egg tart, fruit platters, oatmeal and raisin cookies served with a banana milkshake, or a tropical fruit smoothie.

How they will get to school every day

Most people will be surprised to learn that Prince William and his wife actually take their children to school themselves. Yep, instead of having drivers or nannies take them every morning, the couple makes it one of their duties to bring their kids back and forth.

When George and Charlotte attended different schools last year, the duke and duchess would take turns dropping them off. One would drive George to Thomas’s Battersea in southwest London while the other would walk Charlotte to Willcocks Nursery, which is located near Kensington Palace. This year, however, their carpool will be a little bigger and it’s likely to grow in the next few years.

“The plan was always for Charlotte to follow George to Thomas’s, so Louis will probably also be going,” a family source told Vanity Fair.
