Nintendo has guarded the new Breath of the Wild game so tightly that players do not even know the title of the new Legend of Zelda. Fans have called the Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, BOTW 2, and the Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, according to a new rumor, the Breath of the Wild 2 name may finally have leaked online. While “new details” about the Zelda game come and go, the newest rumor might hold more water than the others.

What is the rumored ‘Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’ name?

While the alleged title is still a rumor, the next adventure of Link and Zelda is “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Duality.”

According to Nintendo Life, the report comes from veteran video game journalist Paul Gale “who runs his own website, appeared in Nintendo Power, and worked with many other video game outlets over the years,” according to Nintendo Life.

In a post, Gale reports that “the sequel to BotW and its main hook is right in the name, which establishes on the ‘Breath’ familiarity from the 2017 hit and [gives] a nod to the fact that you can play as more than the aforementioned title’s Link (including various, polar themes), hence ‘Duality.’”

The Legend of Zelda series has long played with duality. For example, in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Link, and Midna jumped between Hyrule and the Twilight Realm. In A Link to the Past, Link jumped between the Dark World and the Light World. This motif seems backed up by Gale’s post.

“Duality between character abilities, on land and floating regions, past and present, darkness and light, etc. (The individual did note that this name was seen a considerable amount of time ago, supposedly, and could have been one of many template titles),” gale continued.

Is the new ‘Legend of Zelda’ title real?

However, new BOTW 2 theories and rumors pop up every day. How credible is the alleged Breath of the Wild 2 name?

“Gale’s ‘intel’ typically comes from friends he’s made within the games industry ‘over the past 12 years,’” Nintendo Life notes. “His latest post is slightly different, as it does not come from a ‘direct source,’ but is one that he felt was still worth sharing as a rumor.”

No matter how credible a source might seem, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. Until Nintendo confirms new details, they remain speculation.

And it seems the only thing Nintendo has confirmed is more Breath of the Wild 2 delays.

If “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Duality” turns out to be the real name for Breath of the Wild 2, it could confirm a popular fan request.

Fans have wanted to play as Princess Zelda for years. Nintendo has almost given players their wishes in games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. However, the “Duality” could give gamers the chance to control the titular princess.

“If real, it does make sense as to why Nintendo and Mr. Eiji Aonuma have been so hush-hush on the title,” Gale reports. “If fake or not final-yet-close to what the actual name ends up being, this still makes for an interesting topic to discuss.”

Nintendo Treehouse’s Bill Trinen told IGN in 2021 why they kept the name so guarded.

“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important,” Trinen said. “Those subtitles … they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”
