Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring Honors Princess Diana in a Big Way
When the world first caught a glimpse of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring, they were stunned by its beauty. That said, beauty isn’t the only thing that drew them into the custom-made design. It’s unique story and sentimental tribute to Princess Diana did, too.
Curious to know more? From where the diamonds came from to why the band is so special to the bride-to-be, we share every detail of Meghan Markle’s royal engagement ring, ahead.
1. Prince Harry designed the ring himself
Perhaps one of the most romantic aspects of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring? Prince Harry put a tremendous amount of thought into it and designed the ring himself, ensuring it was a true representation of both the couple and the royal family. Featuring three diamonds on a gold band, the royal engagement ring is both modern and elegant.
2. The center diamond is from Botswana
Another key part of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring? The center diamond is from Botswana, Africa. When the couple — who met on a blind date — were just weeks into their relationship, Prince Harry invited Markle on a trip to Botswana with him. Since then, it has become one of the couple’s favorite places in the world.

3. Why Botswana is so important to the couple
Although they haven’t admitted it, it’s obvious in the way they speak about it that Botswana is the place Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell in love. But, believe it or not, that’s not the only reason it’s important to the couple.
Prince Harry first visited Botswana after his mother’s death in 1997 and has gone back to visit year after year ever since — considering it his second home. Now, he not only gets to share it with the love of his life (the couple have visited twice together), but he also gets to give back to its community. In January 2017, Prince Harry became a patron of the Rhino Conservation Botswana. A diamond from Botswana not only symbolizes where the royal couple fell in love, it’s a representation of Prince Harry opening up his world to his bride-to-be.
4. The other diamonds belonged to Princess Diana
One of the most touching aspects of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring? The diamonds on the right and left of her Botswana diamond came from Princess Diana’s collection.
Both Prince Harry and the Duke of Cambridge have done a tremendous job ensuring their mother’s legacy lives on, and Prince Harry including her diamonds in Markle’s engagement ring is a unique way to honor his late mother in the next chapter of his life.
5. The ring band is made out of Meghan Markle’s favorite type of gold
In addition to the beyond meaningful diamond, Prince Harry paid close attention to Meghan Markle’s taste in jewelry. Made from yellow gold — her favorite — the ring band is in line with Markle’s personal style.
6. It was made by Cleave and Company, the Queen’s official jewelers
Another royal touch? The royal engagement ring was made by the queen’s official jewelers, Cleave and Company.
7. Jewelry experts can’t put a price on the ring
Because of the ring’s uniqueness — and tie to Princess Diana — jewelry experts are unable to put a price on Meghan Markle’s engagement ring. But the monetary value combined with the sentimental value might make the ring priceless.
