Kendrick Lamar: His Net Worth, Pulitzer Prize Win, and How He Makes His Money
Kendrick Lamar gained worldwide attention in April 2018 when he became the first rapper to win a Pulitzer Prize in music for his album DAMN. In the past, the music award has gone to jazz or classical artists. Lamar started his rap career while he was still in elementary school. Like many other rappers, he drew inspiration from Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre. Once he reached high school, he released his first mix tape. The attention he garnered from the tape led to him signing with Top Dawg Entertainment.
His Pulitzer Prize win
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lamar says his win motivates him to work harder. He says other people might see this as a cue to relax, but he plans to do just the opposite:
The minute I hear good news, it just motivates me to do more. I don’t want to get complacent. If you asked seven out of 10 people, ‘What would you do if you got the Pulitzer Prize?,’ they’d say, ‘I’d put my feet up.’ But that would make me feel I’d reached my pinnacle at 30 years old, and that wouldn’t make me feel good.
Grammy nominations and wins
Lamar is no stranger to recognition. He’s also a Grammy winner. Lamar received his first Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist and Album of The Year for Good Kid, M.A.A.D City in 2013. The following year, he went on to win his first Grammy for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “I” in 2014. He won the coveted Best Rap Album ward in 2018 for DAMN.
