A Former Acquaintance Says Nick Reiner Hated His Parents Long Before the Slayings
Since Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were murdered inside their Brentwood home on December 14, details of a troubled family life have emerged. The Reiners kept their private life mostly private during their life. Still, their deaths have revealed a great deal of turmoil with their middle son, Nick Reiner. He now stands accused of killing both parents after an altercation at a holiday party. Many assume his lawyer will use his mental health diagnosis as a defense for the murders. A former acquaintance of the aspiring screenwriter hopes that it doesn’t happen. He claims the accused’s distaste for his parents was evident more than a decade ago, long before his diagnosis.
A former acquaintance of Nick Reiner says he hated his parents
Nick Reiner has yet to enter a plea in the slayings that left both of his parents dead. Still, legal experts believe the 32-year-old will plead Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. While there is certainly medical backing to suggest Nick Reiner was mentally ill, a former acquaintance doesn’t think that is the full story.
Earlier this month, a man named Danny Svilar spoke with the Daily Mail. Now a restaurateur, Svilar previously spent time in a high-end rehab facility with Nick Reiner. Svilar told the outlet that he and the younger Reiner were roommates when they were teenagers in a Malibu rehab program. He contended that Reiner, even back then, was entitled, pompous, and easily angered. Svilar claims the 32-year-old admitted to hating both of his parents as they sought treatment for him for a serious drug addiction. He was reportedly especially hostile about his father.
Svilar went on to say that both Rob and Michelle Reiner were actively involved in Nick Reiner’s treatment. They attended all family days at the program. Svilar, who was not at the facility for the same type of issues as Nick Reiner, hasn’t seen or spoken to Nick Reiner since they left the facility more than 15 years ago. Still, his time with the aspiring screenwriter clearly left a lasting impression.
What is he diagnosed with?
Nick Reiner and his father, Rob Reiner, were fairly open about his struggle with addiction while promoting the younger Reiner’s movie, Being Charlie. What they did not discuss was a mental health diagnosis that was reportedly in the works at the time. After the deaths of Michelle and Rob Reiner, several new outlets reported that Nick Reiner had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. The diagnosis came years before the slayings. Still, Nick Reiner was reportedly navigating a medication change when the Reiners were killed.
According to TMZ, a psychiatrist who had been working with the 32-year-old had changed his medication a month earlier. The medication regimen was allegedly switched up when the younger Reiner complained of weight gain. He was reportedly otherwise stable on the previous protocol. Schizoeffective disorder is a severe mental health disorder that causes both hallucinations, as is common with schizophrenia, and mood disturbances.
