Here’s Why Aimee Lou Wood Commented a Vomiting Emoji on a Sydney Sweeney Interview
Sydney Sweeney recently commented on her controversial American Eagle ad, and fellow White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood isn’t impressed. After sparking backlash with an ad that some believe promoted eugenics, Sweeney brushed off concerns. Wood expressed disappointment in Sweeney’s statement with a simple emoji.
The ‘Euphoria’ actor caused controversy with a recent ad
Sweeney recently starred in an American Eagle ad that played on the homophones “jeans” and “genes” with the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” After some criticized the ad for what they saw as a racist dog whistle, many conservative commentators and even Donald Trump praised Sweeney. She said the reaction surprised her.
“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans,” she told GQ. “All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
She added that she found it “surreal” that Trump and JD Vance spoke out in support of the ad.
Aimee Lou Wood commented on a video of Sydney Sweeney discussing the ad
Sweeney’s comment on the backlash has sparked further backlash. Many people believe she should have worked to distance herself from the conservative commentators who were embracing her.
“Presuming that you are not a white supremacist, at least say how horrified you were by how this campaign was amplified and celebrated by unrepentant racists who believe in eugenics,” wrote photographer Misan Harriman on Instagram. “At least recognise the harm your jeans campaign has caused black folk. The undertone of the campaign is that your genetics are superior to others – the play on words is clear as day and racists LOVED it! So, presuming you didn’t know when you shot it, you certainly do now, and it matters. This ain’t it!”
Wood showed her support of Harriman’s statement and disgust with Sweeney by commenting a sick, green-faced emoji.
People have supported Aimee Lou Wood over Sydney Sweeney
Many people have sided with Wood and share her disappointment in Sweeney. They believe the way she addressed the backlash didn’t do her any favors.
“Yeah this response from Sydney was crazy and only made it worse, I fear,” wrote one Reddit user.
“Oof, this is rough and I normally don’t take this stuff too seriously or get too worked up by celebrities being ding dongs,” added another person. “How hard was it to at least say ‘I was doing a jeans ad, I hope people understand there was definitely no white supremacy intent!’”
People also praised Wood for making her point of view on the other actor’s words clear.
“Aimee always on the right side of history!” wrote one person.
“And that is why we love Aimee,” wrote another Reddit user.
Wood has often spoken openly about her political beliefs. She told The Cut that while she deals with anxiety on a daily basis, “the fear just goes” when she speaks up about something important.
