Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer Are Trying a Post-Divorce Strategy That ‘Never Works,’ According to Attorney
Amy Schumer recently filed for divorce from her husband, Chris Fischer, after seven years of marriage. Schumer has repeatedly noted that she and Fischer remain on good terms, and they are hoping to peacefully co-parent their son, Gene. At this stage, Schumer and Fischer are reportedly still living together. A divorce attorney noted that they will likely need to change this dynamic.
Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer are getting a divorce
On Dec. 12, Schumer announced that she and Fischer were ending their marriage. The announcement came after a period of speculation about their relationship.
“Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years,” she wrote. “We love each other very much and will continue to focus on raising our son. We would appreciate people respecting our privacy at this time.”
Sources noted that Schumer and Fischer were still largely living together
“She expects that they’ll co-parent full-time together and that he’ll see Gene almost as much as he does now — if not more,” a source told Page Six. “They are still largely under the same roof, for the kid’s sake.”
The source added that Schumer even hoped Fischer would travel with her and their son if she goes on tour.
“Amy wants Chris to stick around for Gene … If she contemplates another comedy tour at any point in the future, she wants Chris to be the one looking after Gene and ideally be willing to travel with her,” they added. “She just never wants to be romantically involved with him again.”
Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer will likely not be able to continue living together
While Schumer and Fischer are still living together now, Los Angeles family law attorney Patrick Baghdaserians tells us that they will need to find a more permanent solution. In his experience, he said that staying under the same roof never works for divorced couples.
“As far as co-parenting, with Schumer and Fischer owning properties in at least two states, they’re going to sync their schedules so that each of them can be there for their son until the divorce is finalized and they come up with a permanent arrangement,” Baghdaserians tells Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “Amy said when she announced the plans for a divorce in December that they would keep living together, at least for a time. It never works post-divorce.”
He suggested that Gene could stay in one home. Schumer and Fischer would rotate in and out when it was their time to parent.
“For couples who can afford it, one solution I’m seeing a lot lately is what’s called ‘nesting,’ where the child stays in one place, and the parents take turns rotating in and out,” he said. “Parents who do that are providing their kid a lot of stability. Clearly, Amy and Chris have the ability to provide that, it just might require one of them flying to New Orleans or heading up to the Catskills when it’s not their turn to parent.”
The comedian recently sold her Brooklyn townhouse
Shortly after announcing the end of her marriage, Schumer sold her Brooklyn townhouse. Baghdaserians noted that this indicates the divorce has likely been months in the making.
“The timing of all this is very interesting, because last month it was reported in the media that they had sold a Brooklyn townhouse, a day before she announced they were splitting up,” he said. “That suggests this divorce has been months in the making. It would have been in their interest to stay quiet, because when they were selling the townhome they wouldn’t want to go public with a breakup because then whoever was buying the property would treat that purchase like a fire sale.”
Schumer and Fischer bought the home, which featured in the film Moonstruck, in 2022. They sold the home for $11 million, $1.25 million under what they paid for it.
