An Update on Nancy Guthrie; Police Think They Know the Motive Behind the Abduction
It has been six weeks since Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home in the Catalina Foothills in Arizona. The octogenerian remains missing, and her condition is still unknown. While online sleuths and Today fans are desperate for a resolution to the case, the Pima County Sherrif’s Department and the FBI still have no clue where the mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie might be. Still, they seem to be getting closer to understanding the motivation for the attack. A recent press release indicates they know what might have led to the early morning kidnapping, noting the assailant could strike again.
Police are confident that they know the motivation behind Nancy Guthrie’s abduction
While Nancy Guthrie remains missing, police believe they could be getting closer to figuring out the motive behind her disappearance. During a recent press conference, Pima County Sherrif Chris Nanos said that investigators are fairly certain that they know what led to the abduction. Still, he insisted they were not 100% certain and were unwilling to share their theory with the public at this time.
While Nanos has been keeping information close, his recent press release did offer crime followers a few clues. Entertainment Weekly noted that Nanos suggested that everyone “remain vigilant.” While he insisted that the attack was “targeted,” he also implied that the abductor could strike again. Nanos also referred to the abductor as “he.” The reference suggests the police might believe a single person is responsible for the crime.
Several theories have been shared by the public
While the police have made it clear that they believe they know the motive behind Nanvy Gurthrie’s abduction, they will not be sharing the theory with the public at this time. Nanos noted that sharing such information could potentially compromise the investigation. While the police are not sharing their theories about the motivation behind the late-night kidnapping, internet sleuths have shared their own from the very start.
Several features of the case have led amateur sleuths to theorize that money is the motivating factor behind the disappearance. They believe that the abductor knew the Guthrie family had money, and kidnapped the octogenerian with ransom money in mind. The theory gained some weight when a ransom note was made public early on during the disappearance of the elderly Guthrie. While the family is now offering a $1 million reward, no one has yet stepped forward.
Bethenny Frankel has shared her thoughts on Instagram. Frankel, who rarely comments on crimes, thinks that Nancy Guthrie was targeted by someone who may have previously worked with Savannah Guthrie. She theorizes that revenge and resentment might be the motivation behind the abduction. Many social media followers agree with her theory.
A third theory, that the abductor is a deranged fan of Savannah Guthrie’s, has been bandied about by some online sleuths. While it’s always possible, the theory is far less popular than others.
