Angela Simmons Reveals Why She Was Disgusted By Cam Newton on Their First Date
Reality TV star Angela Simmons and former NFL quarterback Cam Newton have finally addressed the long-standing rumor that they previously dated, with Simmons revealing that Newton gave her “the ick.”
On March 27, Simmons was a guest on Newton’s Funky Friday podcast. The two confirmed that they did go on one date back in 2011, but the singer explained that something the athlete did ensured there would never be another date.
Recalling their date in New York City, Simmons said, “I was staying at the London Hotel in New York. We went to this diner. We sat down and talked. This was the first time I met you. A mutual friend connected us.”
Newton interjected that the mutual friend was Kris Jenner’s partner, Corey Gamble.
Simmons then continued, “You, the whole time, were making jokes and laughing at your own jokes. So, you sat across from me and you’re making jokes that I thought were just not funny. And you were patting yourself on the back and laughing.”
Newton seemed stunned and after he said a few times that he didn’t remember the evening, Simmons cut in, insisting, “It felt like an arrogant a******. You sat across from me, and I can’t remember the joke but I remember thinking ‘This is not funny.’ And you were like, ‘Haha! Tap me on back.’ I said, ‘Oh, I’m ready to go.’”
Simmons did acknowledge that Newton behaved better on the way home from the date than during the actual dinner, telling him, “When we take the taxi back that’s when you decided to be nicer. I was about to be like, ‘Alright, bet. Bye.’ But we sat outside the hotel. We talked. That’s when I got to know you.”
Some fans though jumped on Newton for claiming he didn’t remember.
“He went from ‘I don’t remember any of that’ to ‘That was the night before I was drafted,’” one commenter wrote, while another added, “He remembers. Trust me!” And a third posted, “That means that was one of the worst dates she’s had.”
Simmons now has one child with her ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson Sr., who was shot and killed in 2018 while in the driveway of his Atlanta home. She also had a three-year relationship with rapper and record producer Yo Gotti from December 2022 to June 2025.
As for Newton, he’s been in a relationship with comedian Jasmin Brown since 2021. In March 2024, they welcomed their first child together, a daughter. In 2025, they welcomed their second child together, a son. Today, Newton is a father of nine.
He has stated in several interviews that while he takes care of all his children and is present in their lives, he’s not ready to commit to marriage. In a previous episode of his podcast with life coach Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, Newton shared that he doesn’t want to commit to a woman through matrimony, explaining: “My desire to get married is lower than my fear of divorce.”
