Bad Bunny Said the Song at the ‘Heart’ of His Grammy-Winning Album Came to Him in a Dream
This year, Bad Bunny took home the Grammy for Album of the Year. His sixth solo studio album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim. Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Martínez Ocasio, admitted he finished the record shortly before he released it. At least one song came to him without much effort, though. He said the song at the heart of the album came to him in his sleep.
Bad Bunny said one song off his latest album came to him in a dream
One of the songs on Debí Tirar Más Fotos is “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii,” an anti-colonial song that warns about the loss of Puerto Rican culture. The song is vital to the album’s thesis. Ocasio admitted the entire thing came to him in a dream.
“I woke up, I remember it was two in the morning, I wrote the whole thing in the Notes app on my phone, and then I went back to sleep,” he told Vogue, adding, “I always felt like it was the heart of the record, which is an unbelievable thing to say when there’s so much going on around the song, but that’s where everything else starts from — even ‘EoO,’ the song that comes right after, which is a real 2000s reggaeton perreo.”
He spoke about the process of making the record
Before he began working on the record, Ocasio described it as “an album where you’re going to miss a love but also a place.” He began to think about it, but only started writing after attending the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián.
“That’s really when the project began, but by February I already had to go on tour for Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana,” he said. “I did that tour kind of not feeling it; I wanted to stay in PR to write and work these songs that I had in my head.”
Though he’d been thinking about the album for a long time, he admitted he barely got it out by its release date. He said this is his typical working method.
“All my albums I have finished the day before they come out,” he said. “It’s something I’ve tried to try not to do, but it’s my way.”
Bad Bunny won Album of the Year for ‘Debí Tirar Más Fotos’
At this year’s Grammy Awards, Debí Tirar Más Fotos won Album of the Year. After a moment of stunned silence, he took the stage to give his speech.
“Thank you, Mom, for giving birth to me in Puerto Rico. I love you,” he said. “I want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland to follow their dreams – to all the people who have lost a loved one and, even so, have had to move forward with a lot of strength. This award is for you.”
One week after his win, he will take the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show.
