Beyoncé Danced so Hard Her Dress Fell Off While Filming the ‘Crazy in Love’ Video
In 2003, Beyoncé released the music video for “Crazy in Love.” The song appeared on her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, and featured her future husband, Jay-Z. The video features Beyoncé dancing in various locations, and she admitted she sometimes got a little too into the choreography. At one point, Beyoncé said she danced so hard her dress fell off.
Beyoncé said her dress fell off during the ‘Crazy in Love’ music video
In 2003, Beyoncé filmed the music video for “Crazy in Love” in Los Angeles. In the video, Jay-Z encounters Beyoncé in the middle of the road while driving. She dances in various outfits through a number of choreographed scenes.
The video showcases her talent as a dancer and also how hard she was willing to push herself. Beyoncé said she had her one video wardrobe malfunction while filming this video.
“In my ‘Crazy in Love’ video, I was dancing so hard that my whole dress completely fell off in front of all these men,” she told Cosmopolitan in 2006.
Beyoncé spoke about making “Crazy in Love” with Jay-Z
Beyoncé worked with her future husband on “Crazy in Love.” After writing the song, she realized she needed one more element to perfect it.
“I knew the song wasn’t complete, because the horns were so old-school, and I thought if a rapper was on it people would give it more of a chance — because rappers can flow over old-school beats and people accept it,” she told Vanity Fair. “So Jay came into the studio, and it could have been 10 minutes, it could have been 2 minutes — he listened to it and recorded this rap without writing anything down.”
She said his addition really impressed her.
“He just sits there and his mouth starts moving silently, and all of a sudden he does this rap,” she said. “I have seen him do this many times, but this was like three in the morning. He had to be exhausted, I was exhausted. I don’t know how he did this …. He rapped on the song and he added a lot to the energy of it. It really completed the song.”
She said she wanted to move away from the song later in her career
Though the song brought Beyoncé a great deal of success, she was ready to move away from it in the years after its release. She wanted to show a new side of herself through her music.
“I don’t want to hear about ‘Single Ladies’ or ‘Crazy In Love’. I don’t want to hear it,” she told Dazed Magazine in 2011. “I believe that there are certain things that happen and they happen naturally.”
At that point, she said she’d retired her “Sasha Fierce” persona that helped her get into character to perform these songs.
“I killed off needing Sasha Fierce,” she said, adding, “I don’t need her anymore. I am Sasha Fierce. It’s interesting because now I’ve done it for so long it’s so easy for me to go into that performance mode. Literally, I go from being a country girl in the dressing room who’s laughing and being silly into, ‘Okay, it’s time to work!’ I don’t have to mentally prepare myself for it. Honestly, I’m much more interested in showing people the sensitive, the passionate, and the compassionate person that I am. More so than Sasha Fierce.”
Still, she often played these songs on her recent tour for Cowboy Carter.
