Why Did Blac Chyna Sue the Kardashian Family?
Blac Chyna‘s name has been in the headlines recently after it was revealed that she filed a $20 million lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend, Twin Hector.
Chyna, whose real name is Angela White, filed a cross-complaint disputing Hector’s 2024 assault claims against her. Chyna says she struck him but only in self-defense. She also accused the musician of four NDA violations that he signed carrying a penalty of $5 million for each violation.
Chyna’s new lawsuit is reminding some of another headline-making suit she filed against her ex-fiancé’s entire family. Here’s why the “Cash Only” rapper sued Rob Kardashian‘s family.
What Chyna alleged in her lawsuit against the Kardashians
Chyna and Rob Kardashian began dating in early 2016 and within months, the two got engaged and welcomed their daughter, Dream Kardashian. The pair also starred in their own reality TV show, Rob & Chyna, which documented their relationship and everyday lives. The show performed well in ratings.
However, things between Rob and Chyna were not going well, and their show only lasted one season. The two fought a lot and broke up multiple times, and their conflicts often played out on social media for fans. In July 2017, Rob Kardashian posted explicit images of Chyna online without her consent, leading to widespread media coverage and legal action. Chyna obtained a temporary restraining order against him, escalating tensions between her and the Kardashian family.
In October 2017, Chyna filed a lawsuit against Kris Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Khloé Kardashian. In her complaint, the model alleged that the family used their influence over the E! network to have Rob & Chyna canceled, effectively damaging her career and income. Chyna also claimed that the show had been renewed for a second season but was later scrapped due to the family’s interference.
The Kardashians denied those allegations. Their legal team argued that the show’s cancellation was based on the deteriorating relationship between Chyna and Rob, which made filming impractical. They also contended that concerns about safety and well-being, including alleged instances of conflict between the couple, played a role in the network’s decision.
Chyna’s lawsuit also included multiple claims, such as defamation and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage. Chyna argued that the family portrayed her as violent and unstable, which harmed her reputation and business opportunities. The Kardashians maintained that any statements they made were either true or protected opinion.
The trial result
The case went through several legal stages over the next few years, including motions to dismiss and appeals. Some of Chyna’s claims were initially dismissed, but others were reinstated by an appellate court, allowing the case to proceed to trial.
In April 2022, the case was heard in a Los Angeles Superior Court. During the trial, both sides presented evidence, including emails, text messages, and testimony about the production decisions behind Rob & Chyna. Chyna’s legal team attempted to show that the Kardashians exerted undue influence on the network, while the defense argued that the show could not continue because the central relationship had ended.
After deliberation, the jury ruled in favor of the Kardashian–Jenner family on all counts. They found that Chyna had not proven her claims of defamation or wrongful interference. As a result, she was not awarded damages.
In the years since the lawsuit, Rob and Chyna have turned a corner and today are on good terms as they continue to successfully co-parent their daughter. Chyna has recently praised Rob calling him the “best dad. ”
