Bob and Max Sheen Custody Explained: Brooke Mueller Seeks Back Child Support from Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen hasn’t been in the news for anything particularly dramatic in the last couple of years, but it seems the time has come for him to return to the headlines. It’s not a drug-fueled party incident or a chaotic interview that has drawn his name back into the limelight. It is his ex-wife. Brooke Mueller, Sheen’s ex-wife, is calling out the former Two and a Half Men star for failing to pay child support for the twins they share. Mueller alleges he hasn’t paid support in years, and she’d like he money, plus interest immediately. The custody arrangement for Bob and Max Sheen has been pretty complicated from the start. So, who exactly do the now-teenage boys live with?
Brooke Mueller would like Charlie Sheen to pay her $15 million within 30 days
Brooke Mueller is seeking money from her ex-husband. In an oddly timed bid for back child support, Mueller contends that Sheen owes her $8.9 million in child support plus $6.4 million in interest. In the court filing, obtained by TMZ, Mueller argues that Sheen stopped paying child support in full in 2011, and only sent sporadic payments over the years. She is seeking all back support, plus interest. She is also asking that Sheen pay her legal fees.
While Charlie Sheen has not filed a formal response to the request, he did issue a statement, via a representative, to TMZ. The rep told the outlet that Mueller is entitled to absolutely no back support because she’s been “in and out” of rehab centers for 15 out of 16 years of the children’s lives and has done limited full-time parenting. The rep says Sheen has had “100% custody” of Bob and Max Sheen for some time. While the statement didn’t reveal his next move, it’s clear he’ll fight back legally.
Max and Bob Sheen’s early custody arrangement was complicated
While Mueller is seeking years of back child support from her ex-husband, fans were quick to point out that she might not be entitled to all of that money, considering the fact that she wasn’t the primary parent for the boys for several long stretches. Sheen feels the same way.
In 2011, Brooke Mueller was originally granted primary custody of Bob and Max, who were just two at the time. That didn’t last too long, though. CPS stepped in in 2013 and removed the twins from Mueller’s care. The agency noted an unsafe environment amid Mueller’s battle with drug addiction. Denise Richards, Sheen’s other ex-wife, became a temporary legal guardian for the boys. The courts eventually transferred custody of the twins to Mueller’s brother and sister-in-law. Mueller regained custody in 2014.
In 2016, Mueller took her sons, along with their nanny, to a bar. Police were called, and Mueller was taken in for a psychological evaluation. She, once again, lost custody of the twins, with her parents stepping in this time around to care for them. By that point, Sheen had stepped up to co-parent with Mueller’s mother and stepfather after years of a very public spiral.
Where do Bob and Max Sheen live now?
Bob and Max Sheen are now 16 years old and reside primarily with Charlie Sheen. Court documents from a 2024 custody hearing state that the boys’ primary and legal residence is Sheen’s home. Brooke Mueller reportedly lives nearby and has visitation rights with the twins.
In 2023, Sheen gave the world an update on his boys and his role as a full-time dad. He told People that he’d been raising the twins mostly on his own while their mom dealt with some things. He said, “Their mom has been trying to figure some stuff out on her end, so she’s not in the picture too much right now.” Mueller experienced a relapse in 2023 after several years of sobriety. Sheen expressed empathy for her situation at the time. In 2024, the court agreed that custody of Bob and Max would be relinquished to Sheen by Mueller if she tested positive for drugs again. It is unclear exactly how much time she currently spends with the teens, or why she suddenly decided to seek out so much in back support.
Sheen has three other children. His daughter, Cassandra Esteves, is 40. Cassandra was born to Sheen’s high school sweetheart when they were just teens. He shares daughters Sam, 21, and Lola Sheen, 20, with Denise Richards. Mueller does not have any additional children.
