Brian Cox said he rarely swore before his role as Logan Roy in Succession. These days, he’s channeling his character in more ways than one. Cox said he now swears often. He also doles out razor-sharp insults about those around him without much concern about consequences. In a recent interview, Cox took aim at some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

Brian Cox lobbed criticism at Hollywood stars, including Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino

In a recent interview with The Times, Cox didn’t appear to even attempt to censor his negative opinions about his peers. He admitted he turned down a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, a decision he does not regret because he didn’t have to work with Johnny Depp. He described him as “so overblown, so overrated”.

He has worked with Ian McKellan, and described his style of acting as “not to my taste.” He also views former co-stars Edward Norton as a “pain in the arse” and Kevin Spacey as a “stupid, stupid man.”

Cox also slammed Quentin Tarantino — who recently landed in hot water for his derisive comments about a number of actors — as “meretricious”; Michael Caton-Jones as “a complete arsehole”; and David Hare as a “see you next Tuesday.”

Cox has previously made headlines for his criticisms about Succession co-star Jeremy Strong’s method acting. He admitted his wife has often warned him about being too open about his opinions. He’s not worried about blowback, though.

“Well, I don’t know yet if it’s caused me problems,” he said. “I mean, my wife keeps saying, ‘Brian, be careful. Brian, be careful.’ I think, ‘F*** it, I don’t want to be careful any more! I’ll be 80 this year. F*** it! I’m gonna say what I want to say.’”

This year, Cox is making his directorial debut with the film Glenrothan. When discussing it, he took the opportunity to fire off another shot at Tarantino.

“I like to honour the actor’s performance,” he said. “With a Quentin Tarantino film, what you see is all Quentin Tarantino. That’s not me. I don’t want to do that.”
