Britney Spears’ Rep Called Her DUI Arrest ‘Completely Inexcusable’
Britney Spears was arrested this Wednesday for a DUI. The singer was allegedly driving erratically before her arrest. A representative for the singer did not attempt to defend her behavior. Instead, they described the incident as “inexcusable.”
Britney Spears was arrested for a DUI
On Wednesday, March 5, the California Highway Patrol arrested Spears near Westlake Village, a city in Los Angeles County. According to police dispatch audio obtained by Page Six, officers pulled her over after witnessing her driving erratically.
“Black BMW sedan in and out of lanes… speeding. 2026 convertible out of LA. Can we send all units down towards this area, please?”
Audio also said Spears was “erratic[ally] braking, swerving, and driving without taillights.” Police arrested her at 9:30 p.m. and booked her around 3 a.m. They impounded her car and released her shortly after 6 a.m. She will appear in court on May 4.
Spears’ arrest comes several months after people filmed her driving erratically after leaving a Los Angeles restaurant in October.
A representative for Britney Spears called her arrest ‘inexcusable’
A representative for Spears said they could not defend the behavior. They hope that Spears’ arrest will inspire her to make changes in her life.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” they told the LA Times in a statement. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in a long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully she can get the support she needs during this difficult time.”
They added that her family members will take steps to support her. Spears was previously under a conservatorship from 2008 until 2021. She received a great deal of support from fans, who rallied behind the #FreeBritney movement.
“We have a safety net in place for Britney, both on the personal side and on the financial side,” attorney Mathew Rosengart said at the time. “… But Britney as of today is a free woman and she’s an independent woman. And the rest, with her support system, will be up to Britney.”
She was previously arrested for a hit-and-run
Spears’ arrest this week comes nearly 20 years after she was arrested for a hit-and-run. In 2007, Spears allegedly hit a parked car and drove away. She was also reportedly driving without a valid license. She later settled with the car’s owner.
That same year, Spears appeared to run over a paparazzo’s foot in Los Angeles. Initially, the photographer, who remained unnamed, said he did not fault her.
“Things happen at certain times and she was just a little impatient,” he said, per Today. “She got a little impatient for whatever reason. I say let bygones be bygones.”
Six months later, however, he filed a criminal complaint against Spears. Prosecutors ultimately refused to pursue the case, noting that the paparazzo himself was at fault. Per CBS News, Deputy District Attorney Joseph D. Shidler wrote that the “only way the victim’s foot could have been where the video indicates it to be was by the victim placing it in that location.”
