Brooklyn Beckham’s statement about his relationship with his parents came as a shock to many. While rumors about a familial rift have circulated for years, the family has not commented on them. In his recent post to his Instagram Stories, Brooklyn confirmed many of the rumors. A PR expert shared how this decision could have been strategic on Brooklyn’s part.

Brooklyn Beckham recently posted a statement about his parents

After a long period of speculation, Brooklyn addressed the rumors about his relationship with his parents. He noted that he wanted to keep the matter private.

“I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.”

He accused his parents of trying to ruin his relationship and being overly concerned with their public image.

“For my entire life, my parents have controlled narratives in the press about our family,” he wrote. “The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into. Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they’ll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their own facade. But I believe the truth always comes out.”

He ended his statement with another request for privacy.

Brooklyn Beckham’s statement could be strategic, said PR expert

Brooklyn’s statement has generated countless headlines in the time since he posted it. Brand Manager and PR expert Colm Phelan from Casinos.com spoke about the impact the statement has had.

“In today’s news cycle, how a public figure chooses to air private disputes can be as impactful as the content of the dispute itself,” he told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in a statement. “From a PR and brand standpoint, Brooklyn Beckham’s decision to take what was traditionally a private family matter into a very public arena operates in the same attention economy that has surrounded other high-profile families. Fake outrage campaigns, high profile influencer breakups before pivots into new ventures are pretty common.”

He noted that while there are real emotions behind the post, there could also be a strategic element to the way he aired out the drama.

“Whether intentional or not, releasing a long social media narrative creates a compelling, shareable moment that drives engagement and conversation around the Beckham brand and identity,” he said. “That’s not to diminish the genuine emotional elements at play, but in the midst of personal conflict and public persona, instances like these undeniably feed media attention and can reshape a celebrity narrative in ways that blur the lines between authenticity and strategic communication.”

David Beckham appeared to comment on his son’s post

Naturally, people have looked to David and Victoria Beckham for their response to their son’s statement. David appeared to address the post in a recent appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

“I have always spoken about social media and the power of social media. For the good and for the bad,” David said. “The bad we’ve talked about with what kids can access these days, it can be dangerous. But what I have found personally, especially with my kids as well, use it for the right reasons. I’ve been able to use my platform and my following for UNICEF. And it has been the biggest tool to make people aware of what’s going on around the world for children.”

He noted that his children have made mistakes on social media in the past.

“They make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes,” he said. “That is how they learn. That is what I try to teach my kids. You sometimes have to let them make those mistakes as well.”
