Cardi B’s rise to fame was explosive. She went from stripper to social media star to reality television scene-stealer. Once she started releasing music, she became a household name. While Cardi was happy to achieve fame, she admitted there were some pitfalls to it. She realized that she couldn’t implicitly trust the people around her anymore.

Cardi B said fame made her unable to trust people

Cardi admitted that after she made her stratospheric rise to success, she began to feel a sense of paranoia. She couldn’t tell if people wanted to be around her or simply in proximity to wealth and fame.

“When I was broke, I ain’t really have nobody,” she told Fader in 2017. “Now I have so many people that support me. Do people like me ‘cause of me? Or do they just like Cardi B?”

She wasn’t sure she could trust the people coming into her life post-fame. She also noted that many people from her past conveniently resurfaced after her success.

“I have a lot of n****s that I used to date, and they used to give me a hard time, and now it’s like all of a sudden y’all love me,” she said. “What makes you out of nowhere love me now? I’m still the same person, I still suck dick the same way, my attitude is still the same, so, why now?”

Cardi B said she preferred spending time with the people she knew before fame

When Cardi was home in New York, she preferred to spend time with the people in her life before fame. She felt she could be herself around them.

“You see how my managers and my publicist and people from the label, they around me 24/7?” she asked. “Sometimes I wanna be with people that remind me of who I am.”

They didn’t treat her like a celebrity; instead, they allowed her to be a normal person.

“If I tell my friends I want some soda or I want a beer, they will tell me, ‘Alright b****, go downstairs and get it yourself!’”

Even after years of fame, Cardi admitted that she still doesn’t spend all that much time with other celebrities

She felt grateful for certain aspects of her celebrity life

Though fame could be stress-inducing, it also allowed her to give back to those who have always been by her side. She appreciated the way she could use her wealth to help family members.

“My mom’s side of the family, we’re dealing with a certain situation right now that’s very difficult,” she told Complex. “But, I’m so grateful. I feel like God blessed me to help what’s going on in my family. I mean, I’m the one that everybody calls when there’s something real serious, or it’s like, motherf***ers just playing.”
