Cardi B said she had to change the way her music sounded

Before Cardi B rose to widespread fame, she wanted to sound like the artists she grew up admiring. As she came closer to fame, though, she realized that she might have to change her sound. This was not an easy decision.

“There are so many great New York artists that be like, ‘Oh this new music is trash, this and that,’” she told Fader in 2017. “Well, unfortunately for you, it’s what’s selling.”

She realized that if she wanted to reach the level of success she hoped to achieve, she had to settle on a sound that would sell.

“You gotta follow the trends, it is what it is,” she said. “At the end of the day, you need to be with what sells. Sometimes it kinda crushes me because I wanna do music like how I like, but if it’s not selling and it’s not gonna work, then I’ll change my sound.”

She admitted that her love of music had to tie in with her hopes of mainstream success.

“I have a passion for music, I love music,” she said. “But I also have a passion for money and paying my bills.”

Cardi has since become one of the most successful female rappers of all time.
