Cardi B said she turned down a chance to perform at the Super Bowl in the past, a move she would not make again. In 2019, Cardi said she turned down a chance to perform at the game because she wanted to stand behind Colin Kaepernick. Now, though, she said she feels ready to take on the halftime show.

Cardi B said she didn’t want to perform at the Super Bowl

In 2019, Cardi said she turned down the offer to perform at the Super Bowl because she wanted to support Colin Kaepernick. She said the decision did not come easily.

“My husband, he loves football,” she said, per The Guardian. “His kids play football. It’s really hard for him … he really wants to go to the Super Bowl but he can’t go to the Super Bowl because he’s got to stand for something. You have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”

Six years later, however, Cardi said she would accept if asked. She also feels that she’s musically in a better place.

“I got asked to do the Super Bowl and I denied it,” she told Billboard. “I feel like soon, if I get to do it, I’m going to have more hits. I’m going to be more experienced and I’m going to eat that up.”

Cardi B is currently dating an NFL player

Cardi’s openness to performing at the Super Bowl could have something to do with her romance with NFL player Stefon Diggs. She said that while she considers herself a hard worker, his discipline impresses her.

“He has to do two different things: learn his playbook and get physical,” she said. “He has to be in bed at a certain time and wake up at a certain time. I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh. You’re literally in the military. You really work hard.’”

She added that his work ethic inspires her.

“I work hard, but I can take a little break,” she said. “I can lay back and I don’t have to be running, but it’s very inspirational to see how hard somebody works. It’s just like, ‘Wow. You should be proud of yourself.’”

She spoke about her upcoming album

Cardi said she’s more prepared for the Super Bowl than ever because she has more music than she did in 2019. She is preparing to drop her second album, Am I the Problem? It is her first album since 2018’s Invasion of Privacy. She spoke about why it took her so long to put out another album.

“I always knew that I was going to drop a second album, I just didn’t have a project well put together,” she said. “My fans be like, ‘Oh, you should have put a project together when “WAP” and “Up” was out,’ but I only had four records that I liked. I didn’t have an album done around that time. I’m not the kind of person that’s going to lock in in two months and complete an album. I’m very picky with my music.”

She said she’s confident in the upcoming release, even though she hasn’t put out this much music in years.

“So many girls come and go. They’re great, but yet [the fans are] asking for my product. Every year there’s a debate on social media about when is my album dropping. They’re not saying that about other people, so y’all need to ask them. That’s why I’m so confident.”
