The Bates family, best known for their now-defunct show Bringing Up Bates, is having a rollercoaster few weeks. While they have welcomed two new children into their oversized family, one of their own is battling a serious medical condition that has landed her in intensive care. While Carlin Bates celebrates the arrival of her third baby, Erin Bates is fighting for survival in the ICU following the delivery of her seventh child.

Carlin Bates and Evan Stewart announce the arrival of their third child

Carlin Bates and Evan Stewart welcomed their third child together on September 9. The couple, who already have a son and daughter, opted to keep the gender of their new addition a surprise. Evan made the big announcement in the delivery room. While it took a bit of time to update followers, they announced the arrival of their newest baby, a girl, via Instagram. They have opted not to share her name yet. Followers largely assume they are waiting to monetize the big reveal via YouTube.

While they have happy things to focus on, the Bates family is also struggling with some serious unknowns. Carlin and Evan have opted to remain quiet on social media about Erin Bates’ medical struggles, which has upset some followers. Critics argue that they should be more publicly sympathetic, as they are familiar with the terror of complicated medical issues. While Carlin hasn’t had medical issues immediately following delivery, she navigated a complex and terrifying medical journey when she began having seizures shortly after the birth of her second child, Zade. While the couple brought followers along on her medical journey, they didn’t explain exactly how the situation was resolved. Carlin also battled meningitis in 2020.

Carlin and Evan married in 2019 and welcomed their daughter, Layla, in 2020. Zade joined the family in 2022. Carlin Bates is Gil and Kelly Jo Bates’ 9th child.

Erin Bates is still battling medical complications

At the same time that Evan Stewart and Carlin Bates are celebrating the arrival of their new baby, the rest of the family is holding their breath as Erin Bates battles a case of sepsis that landed her in the ICU two weeks ago. According to Instagram updates, the mother of seven gave birth to her seventh child, a baby boy, on August 25. Two days later, they announced his arrival, but asked for prayers for Erin due to complications. Things seem to have spiraled quickly from there.

By September 1, Erin was in the ICU, being treated for a UTI, kidney infection, and septic shock. While some of the updates were hopeful, things turned again on September 4, when Chad returned to the platform to inform followers that Erin had a seizure that doctors were trying to figure out.

While the Bates family claims Erin is recovering from her ordeal, they revealed that she was moved from one hospital to another, where she could receive specialized care. Chad Paine, who has been updating followers via his shared Instagram account with Erin, did not elaborate on the new type of care Erin was in need of, or if the move was actually a step in the right direction. The last update from Chad was published on Sept. 10.
