Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were murdered inside their Brentwood home sometime in the early morning hours of December 14. They had attended a holiday event hosted by Conan O’Brien the evening before, and had plans with Michelle and Barack Obama for the evening of December 14. Two nights prior, they were dining with Maria Shriver.
The couple’s middle child, Nick Reiner, stands accused of carrying out the murders after an allegedly heated argument broke out at O’Brien’s party. The 32-year-old son of the well-known Hollywood couple was staying in his parents’ guest house. He had struggled significantly with substance abuse issues from the time he was a teen.
Police apprehended Nick Reiner on the evening of December 14. He remains in custody. He has hired a powerful criminal attorney, Alan Jackson, to defend him, though it is unclear how he is financing his defense. The Reiners’ daughter, Romy Reiner, was the first to discover the gruesome scene. Michele and Rob Reiner were also parents to Jake Reiner. Rob Reiner had a daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.
